Gmail and other services let third parties read users' emails

Only companies checked by Google would be able to access messages and users would have had to grant permission when they agreed to the terms and conditions of third-party tools.

Hundreds of app developers electronically "scan" inboxes of the people who signed up for some of these programs, and in some cases employees do the reading, the paper reported.

The app companies say that their actions are covered by their user agreements.

"We make it possible for applications from other developers to integrate with Gmail - like email clients, trip planners and CRM systems - so that you have options around how you access and use your email", said Google.

"Some people might consider that to be a dirty secret".

The Wall Street Journal does not allege misuse of data by Google or the apps mentioned. But there's still this uneasy feeling that all these 3rd party apps can see things like recipient addresses, timestamps, and yes, entire messages.

"It includes automated and manual review of the developer, assessment of the app's privacy policy and homepage to ensure it is a legitimate app, and in-app testing to ensure the app works as it says it does", Frey noted. Coming to Edison Software, they are a company that help users in managing their emails.

She is also at pains to point out that while Google does scan incoming emails for the purposes of spam protection, to offer the Smart Reply feature and so on, the company neither reads the contents of emails, nor uses the contents to tailor ads. It "flags potentially risky apps so you can revoke any previously granted permissions that you are no longer comfortable with", she wrote. Users had to deliberately opt out from granting these apps access to their Gmail accounts to stop third-party companies looking at their data. Gmail's primary business model is to sell our paid email service to organizations as a part of G Suite.

Google told us that it vets partners to make sure they're only requesting data that users have given them access to and that they have a privacy policy in place.
