North Korea said to be dismantling key parts of launch site

The U.S. -based North Korea monitoring group 38 North said recent satellite images show North Korea has begun dismantling key facilities at the Sohae Satellite Launching Station on the country's northwest coast.

This July 22, 2018, satellite image released and annotated by 38 North on Monday, July 23, 2018, shows what the US research group says is the dismantled engine test stand at the Sohae launch site in North Korea. The parts include a rocket engine test stand used to develop liquid-fuel engines.

"Considerable progress has been made in dismantling the rail-mounted processing/transfer structure".

Soon after the briefing, the official told South Korean correspondents in NY that the South Korean government "needed" some exemption from worldwide sanctions on the North to implement the Panmunjom Declaration, adding that it was asking the global community to grant that exemption as it was leading the North through dialogue and cooperation.

"It will take full enforcement of sanctions for us to get there, it will also take chairman Kim following through on his personal commitments that he made to President Trump in Singapore", stated Pompeo. "In both images the two fuel/oxidizer bunkers, main processing building and gantry tower remain untouched", said Bermudez.

The Washington Post and other media outlets have reported in recent days that Trump has fumed at his aides in private about a lack of progress since the June 12 summit in Singapore even as he publicly hails the success of the negotiations.

Since the Singapore summit, satellite imagery has picked up signs that North Korea may actually have advanced its nuclear and missile programs.

Paramedics tell CityNews the scene encompasses several blocks and a number of victims have sustained significant injuries. Toronto Star, quoting eyewitnesses, described a man dressed in black firing between 15 and 20 shots.

"This is consistent with North Korea's public line, which is that its successful test program is now transitioning to mass production of nuclear and missile systems", he said.

The Trump administration has maintained optimism about the diplomatic process aimed at persuading the North to abandon its nuclear weapons program, insisting there's "no rush" to reach a final deal. The dismantling work probably began sometime within the last two weeks, he said.

More than 35,000 Americans were killed on the Korean peninsula during the war, with 7,700 of these USA troops still listed as missing in action - a lot of them in North Korea.

China and Russian Federation have argued that North Korea should be rewarded with the prospect of eased sanctions for opening up dialogue with the United States and halting missile tests.

Dr Narang says the Sohae test site could be destroyed, and North Korea could continue to improve their missile force and produce nuclear weapons.

Pompeo made the remarks after he and US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, as well as with leaders from Japan, South Korea and the entire UN Security Council on Friday.

"The U.S. side never mentioned the issue of establishing a peace regime on the Korean peninsula which is essential for defusing tension and preventing a war", the North Korean foreign ministry said in a statement carried by the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) in early July. But, some experts do not believe Kim will ever give up his nuclear weapons because he may see them as the best guarantee of his survival as leader.
