President Trump planning emergency aid to farmers affected by tariffs

President Trump planning emergency aid to farmers affected by tariffs

"Ryan's comments come just hours after Trump tweeted that tariffs were the "greatest" and viewed America as a "'piggy bank" that was being "robbed".

"While we're grateful the administration is doing something, we're hopeful these tariff issues will be resolved soon because farmers would rather trade than take aid", said Joel Rotz, Pennsylvania Farm Bureau spokesman.

"Tariffs are taxes that punish American consumers and producers", he wrote. Rand Paul added on Twitter.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Tuesday pledged up to $12 billion in farm aide, in a "one-time" action, for farmers affected by President Donald Trump's trade war.

But some Republicans disagree with the president.

"The escalating tariff threats made by the administration will not effectively address or advance our shared goal of changing these harmful Chinese practices", the statement said.

The program is "an acknowledgement" that imposing tariffs "has a lot of unintended consequences that creates a lot of collateral damage", Sen.

Farm groups generally have stood by Trump during the trade war although anxiety has begun to rise in farm country.

At a speech Tuesday, he asked farmers to not believe reports that a trade war is a bad thing. Chuck Grassley, a longtime pro-Trump stalwart, had his doubts while calling the bailout money 'encouraging for the short term'.

Perdue said the temporary relief measures are an attempt to help American farmers challenged by "disruptive markets", according to the AP.

Trump 'Very Happy' with North Korea Nuclear Weapons Talks
Both Pompeo and Trump have argued there is no daylight between the two governments' positions on Pyongyang's nukes. Calling the talks "very productive", Pompeo told media that he "spent a good time" talking about denuclearisation.

President Trump tweeted on Tuesday "tariffs are the greatest". but a sizable portion of Americans seem to disagree with him on the matter. It's as simple as that'.

The tariff, which is a tax Chinese buyers pay the government to purchase the commodity, ensures Chinese buyers will buy from other countries. China has retaliated with duties on soybeans and pork, affecting Midwest farmers in a region of the country that supported the president in his 2016 campaign. On Tuesday, many spoke out to pan the bailouts as corporate welfare - but there appears to be no movement on Republicans' part to roll back the tariffs.

Republican lawmakers running for re-election in rural America worry that the fallout could turn voters off, even in states Trump won handily.

Glenn Brunkow, who farms corn, soybeans and other crops near Wamego, said he doesn't like the idea of having to rely on aid.

Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue unveiled the plan Tuesday, calling it a short-term fix meant to provide "time to work on long-term trade deals".

"President Trump personally promised me that agriculture would be held harmless as he worked on trade, and today's announcement of $12 billion in USDA assistance for disrupted markets confirms his intention to keep his promise to me", said King.

The program will extend about $12 billion in emergency aid, according to the Washington Post.

Critics said Trump's aggressive approach makes it tough for other countries to offer concessions, lest they be seen by their own people as caving in to bullying.

"I'm pleased that certain aspects of his policies have a positive effect but there also have been a lot of negative effects", Hoyer, D-Md., said.
