Starbucks to ditch plastic straws globally by 2020

It's a plastic strawless lid that will come to replace single-use plastic straws that now inundate its coffee shops.

Starbucks announced plans to eliminate more than 1 billion plastic straws per year from its stores worldwide by 2020. "Metal straws can be risky for people with neurological conditions such as Parkinson's whereas reusable plastic straws present hygiene concerns to people with specific health conditions".

The brewer is phasing out plastic, one-time-use straws, because of material waste and danger to aquatic sea life they can cause.

Those straws will be provided for blended Frappuccino beverages, or by special request, the company said.

WATCH: Plastic straw ban? Swedish furniture giant IKEA recently announced that it will stop selling single-use plastic products at all its stores globally by 2020. In May, the European Union also suggested a ban on some plastic items, including straws. And it's a part of Starbucks' $10 million investment in creating recyclable and compostable cups around the world. On July 1, Seattle became the first US city to ban plastic straws, spoons, forks and knives.

Washington is stepping up pressure on all countries, including India and China, to completely stop buying oil from Iran by November 4.

Local government officials across the country are considering banning plastic straws, and some Charlottesville businesses have gotten a head start.

"For our partners and customers, this is a significant milestone to achieve our global aspiration of sustainable coffee, served to our customers in more sustainable ways", Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson said in a statement.

Stores in Seattle and Vancouver will be the first to begin using the new strawless lids, which will be used for iced coffee, tea and espresso drinks beginning in the fall.

Nicholas Mallos, director of Ocean Conservancy's Trash Free Seas program, called Starbucks' decision a "shining example" of how companies can help fight ocean pollution.
