Calgary Muslims helping feed city's less fortunate during Eid al-Adha

The ruling African National Congress (ANC) on Tuesday extended their best wishes to the Muslim community in South Africa and across the globe as they celebrate Eid al-Adha. In the Islamic lunar calendar, the day is determined based on the sighting of the Crescent Moon and the New Moon.

"On this occasion of Eid-ul-Adha, I urge all Nigerians to rise above personal, group, sectarian and other interests, and to promote harmony and tolerance in dealing with one another at all times.‏".

Eid al-Adha will commence on the evening of Tuesday, August 21 and will last until Saturday, August 25.

What is Eid al Adha? Eid-ul-Adha is celebrated with devotion by Muslims across the world.

Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, the holiest month of the Islamic year.

People begin their Eid celebrations by going to the Mosque for prayers.

The words can also be translated as "Happy Eid" or "Blessed Celebration". The animal is gifted to friends and family, distributed among the poor, while, a part is cooked at home. Fasting the day before the holiday washes away two years worth of sins in the previous and coming years. It is celebrated with much more fanfare, as families come together to break their fast with a huge feast.

Mr Al-Yolawi also admonished Muslims to have good intention for the sacrifice because it was a prerequisite to achieving acceptable sacrifice.
