Caracas drone explosion 'attack on Venezuela President Maduro' - government

Three local authorities who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case said the incident was actually a gas tank explosion inside an apartment near the site of Maduro's speech.

In the video below, shared on Twitter by Walla foreign affairs editor Guy Elster, Madura is seen on the podium speaking with the crowd about Venezuela's economy.

The group did not respond to several requests for information from Reuters.

Maduro, a former bus driver who replaced former President Hugo Chavez after his death in 2013, won a new six-year term in May but his main rivals disavowed the election and alleged massive irregularities.

It is understood the president was rushed from the scene following the apparent attack but reappeared for a state broadcast, in which he blamed Colombia's President Juan Manuel Santos for the attack.

Seconds later, dozens of soldiers were seen running away before the broadcast was cut off, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) reported.

Opec member Venezuela's once-thriving socialist economy has collapsed since the 2014 fall of oil prices.

"The investigation has already produced evidence that this was an attempt against the life of President Nicolas Maduro, but he is completely unharmed".

The head of the assembly, Diosdado Cabello, tweeted that Maduro and the assembled military chiefs had survived a "terrorist attack" he blamed on the opposition.

The BBC said loud bangs could also be heard in the footage. "We are carefully following the situation".

In the midst of near-daily protests a year ago, a rogue police officer flew a stolen helicopter over the capital and launched grenades at several government buildings. Perez was hunted down and killed by Venezuelan forces in January.
