Cynthia Nixon and NY Governor Andrew Cuomo Get Intense During Debate

State politics are not usually an interesting ordeal in NY, but tonight's primary debate between Democratic gubernatorial candidates Cynthia Nixon and Andrew Cuomo should offer an intriguing window into the national temperature, politically speaking.

The move by the Cuomo campaign is aimed at softening the blow of zingers that Nixon is expected to hurl at the governor over crummy subway service and corruption during Wednesday's evening debate at Hofstra University. Two topics in particular got the two trading jabs. immigration and public transportation.

"Can you please stop interrupting?" he asked as she talked over him.

At one point he cited a quote Nixon had given to the New York Times, saying that she might not have run against someone like former New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg. "We need to oppose Donald Trump not just with rhetoric but with policy".

Kramer reminded Nixon again her time was up.

Cuomo is the son of the late Mario Cuomo, who was a three-term NY governor and considered a liberal lion. In their statement, the campaign said that "Cynthia will debate Governor Cuomo backwards and in high heels if she has to".

As a political ingenue who has not held office at any level before, she represents an audacious, if outside, threat to establishment figure Cuomo who has powerful standing in the party. The two battled over everything from health care and public unions, to the state of the NY subway system.

"Can you stop lying?".

The brawl truly began with the subway question, after Nixon, who has attacked the city's struggling transportation system as "Cuomo's MTA", said that the governor had left it underfunded.

Nixon said New Yorkers should vote for her because she was a longtime champion of causes such as abortion access, better funding for schools and equal rights for gay and lesbian people. The victor faces Republican Marc Molinaro and independent Stephanie Miner in the November elections.
