Florida firefighters report for duty on front lines of California fires

The fast-moving wildfire has already charred 140 square miles, and it's still only 24 percent contained.

Over 4,200 personnel assigned to the blaze have carved containment lines around 35 percent of the perimeter of the blaze.

Following years of drought and a summer of record-breaking heat, enormous tracts of forest, shrub and grassland have become tinder that allows even a small spark to explode into a devouring blaze, authorities said.

When asked about the potential for larger fires this summer and fall, Brown said: "I don't have a crystal ball here but I would not be surprised if there were more fires..."

Having torched more than 121,000 sections of land, a territory bigger than New Orleans, the blast was the greatest of 16 noteworthy rapidly spreading fires throughout California and the most impressive of more than 90 crosswise over 13 Western states from Texas to Alaska.

"We're in for a really rough ride, and it's going to get expensive, it's going to get risky", Brown said.

The blaze in the Redding area, 225 miles (360 kilometers) north of San Francisco, is the largest of 18 wildfires burning throughout California.

The largest blaze burned in the Redding area, in Shasta County north of Sacramento.

How some states are fighting to stop 'undetectable' 3D-printed guns
A federal judge on Tuesday stopped the release of blueprints to make untraceable and undetectable 3D-printed plastic guns. Democrats also filed a separate bill to require that all guns have at least one nonremovable component made of metal.

Officials are lifting more evacuations across Shasta County as firefighters gain containment on a wildfire burning in the region.

Tens of thousands of people across California are waiting to return home or assess what remains of their homes after the fires.

Officials say 20 people who had been reporting missing in California's devastating wildfires are now accounted for.

The fire, which is almost twice the size of Sacramento, was only 35 per cent contained after more than a week.

"We recognize that as people enter back into their neighborhoods, they're going to know people, family members and neighbors that have lost homes", Moore said.

A new fire, being called the Eel Fire, is causing need for mandatory evacuations in Mendocino County as of Tuesday.

Twin fires in Mendocino and Lake counties had burned 14 homes and threatened 12,000 more. Since then, it has destroyed more than 1,018 homes.
