New York University makes tuition free for all medical students

About 93 first-year students will receive full-year scholarships, on top of 350 students who are already in the midst of their medical program, the publication said.

NYU Langone says Thursday's announcement comes as the medical community reckons with the moral impact of higher education costs.

New York University is set to become the first top-ranked institution in the U.S.to pay for the tuition of all its medical students.

Seventy-two percent of graduates from medical school in 2017 graduated with a median of $180,000 in debt, according to data from the Association of American Medical Colleges cited by the university.

Ease burnout. Educational debt can affect practicing physicians on highly personal level: the 48 percent of students graduating with greater than $200,000 in debt are 1.7 times more likely to experience symptoms of burnout.

At the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, which focuses on training physician scientists, all students have received full-tuition scholarships since 2008 regardless of financial need. "It is very important to provide the best conditions for reception, people do not deserve less", - said the assistant to the Dean at NY University in the admissions and Finance Rafael Rivera. Rivera said he hopes other schools consider establishing a tuition-free fund for medical students. Of the 151 medical schools in the United States, is NYU the first in the country to offer full tuition to medical students?

The debt can also affect what specialty students choose to pursue, deterring some from the lower-paying positions in pediatrics and primary care.

"This is going to be a huge game-changer for us, for our students and for our patients", said Dr. Rafael Rivera, associate dean for admission and financial aid.

Of course, the $552 million in financial aid must be balanced against the $2.276 billion in tuition collected (in 2015, latest year available, according to the school's Form 990 filing).

"A population as diverse as ours is best served by doctors from all walks of life, we believe", Grossman said, "and aspiring physicians and surgeons should not be prevented from pursuing a career in medicine because of the prospect of overwhelming financial debt". "You have no idea how important this is", one person tweeted, noting that their boss has been a pediatric physician for more than 20 years and still has student loans. "We hope that many other academic medical centers will soon choose to join us on this path". The debt is even higher for students who attend private schools.
