The spate of violence erupted just after midnight, and two people were killed and 28 others were hurt in shootings before 3 a.m. The first and most violent shooting was on the 1300 block of West 76th Street around 12:30 a.m. where eight people were shot.

At least 71 people were shot, including 10 fatally, over the weekend in Chicago, marking a chilling spasm of violence for a city that has struggled with murders and shootings in recent years even as the national homicide rate hovers near historic lows.

Of those who reported an age, the victims were between 11 and 62 years old.

Four of the victims were teenage girls.

Chicago's gun violence drew the attention of President Donald Trump's lawyer, ex-New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who tweeted Sunday, blaming Chicago's longtime "Democratic rule" for the shootings and saying that former police superintendent Garry McCarthy could help reduce the murder rate.

But although June marked 15 straight months of fewer killings and shootings, on 25 June, at least 21 were shot and two died. "And there is a shortage of values of what is right and what is wrong", said Emanuel, a Democrat.
