The violence raced through the city less than three days after hundreds of demonstrators temporarily shut down the city's iconic Lake Shore Drive in protest of gun violence while calling for the resignation of Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

The spate of violence erupted just after midnight, and two people were killed and 28 others were hurt in shootings before 3 a.m. The first and most violent shooting was on the 1300 block of West 76th Street around 12:30 a.m. where eight people were shot.
