Turkey's Cavusoglu tells US' Pompeo threats and sanctions won't work

Pompeo remarks came just two days after the Trump administration slapped sanctions on Turkey's justice and interior ministers over Brunson's case.

The sanctions targeting Justice Minister Abdulhamit Gul and Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu freeze any property or assets on USA soil held by the two ministers, and bar United States citizens from doing business with them.

State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said Pompeo and Cavusoglu "had a constructive conversation" and "agreed to continue to try to resolve the issues between our two countries".

Pompeo met with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu in Singapore during a security conference in Southeast Asia.

"The Turks were on notice that.it was time for Pastor Brunson to be returned", Pompeo told reporters in Singapore.

Turkey has said the sanctions are unacceptable.

Despite a sharp deterioration in relations over the detention of an American pastor, the United States and Turkey remain valued partners, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Saturday, in an apparent bid to ease tensions that have rocked ties between the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies.

"Of course, it can not be expected to solve all these crises or problems in one meeting", he added.

And the 19-year-old, who has only made eight senior appearances to date, is enjoying the experience so far, despite mixed fortunes for United in pre-season.

"Everyone's very disappointed. Nobody expected this kind of treatment (toward) two Cabinet ministers", said Ilnur Cevik, a senior adviser to Turkish strongman President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has rejected the USA demands, saying his government won't back down and is willing to "go its own way" if the US acted. These are innocent people.

In a statement announcing the sanctions, the US Department of the Treasury said Gul and Soylu are the leaders of organisations that have engaged in "serious human rights abuse".

The pastor denies the charges while United States officials have publicly insisted that Brunson is innocent and should be freed.

Last week, President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence threatened to impose sanctions on Turkey if Brunson was not immediately released.

The lira hit a record low of 5.0934 to the dollar, recovering to trade at 5.0605 by 1434 GMT.

Two Turkish employees of USA consulates in Turkey are also now in jail on terror charges, and another is under house arrest, while several Americans have been caught up in the crackdown that followed a failed 2016 coup.
