WaPo columnist calls on GOP to censure Trump over security clearances

After revoking security clearance from former Central Intelligence Agency director John Brennan, Donald Trump reportedly is prepared to exact the same vengeance on other individuals who he sees as political enemies.

U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday he plans to revoke the security clearance of Bruce Ohr, a Justice Department official whose wife was employed at the company that was involved in producing the dossier on Trump's links to Russian Federation. All are critics of the president or are people who Trump appears to believe are against him.

Ohr's wife worked for Fusion GPS.

Former CIA directors and other top national security officials are typically allowed to keep their clearances, at least for some period.

President Donald Trump is linking his decision to revoke the security clearance of former CIA Director John Brennan to the special counsel's investigation into Russian Federation election meddling and possible ties to the Trump campaign.

President Trump said today at the White House he's actually doing the opposite.

"If anything, I'm giving him a bigger voice", the president said.

"There's no silence", Trump said.

The extreme action of revoking security clearances is one more instance of Donald Trump undertaking measures that no other president has done, leaving legal analysts in question about whether the action is actually within his authority.

"So, I think it's something that had to be done", Trump said of taking away Brennan's clearance.

In August 2016, just two days after Brennan briefed Senator Harry Reid and other members on Russian interference in the election, the Nevada senator wrote a letter to then-FBI director James Comey, calling the FBI to investigate Trump's campaign. "Revoking the security clearance of former Central Intelligence Agency chief is nothing but a blatant attempt to silence a critic, to take away his right to free speech, to purge him".

That directly contradicted a July 2017 statement from Trump Jr. - written with the consultation of the White House - that claimed the meeting had been primarily about adoption.

According to The Hill, Trump spoke on Friday about Bruce Ohr, calling him a disgrace.

The first letter's other signees include former Directors of Central Intelligence Robert Gates, William Webster, George Tenet and Porter Goss; former CIA Directors Gen. Michael Hayden, Leon Panetta and Gen. David Petraeus; former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper; and former deputy CIA directors John McLaughlin, Stephen Kappes, Avril Haines, David Cohen and Michael Morell, who is also a CBS News senior national security contributor.

McRaven previously has been vocal in his criticism of Trump's performance as president. Trump says he is reviewing security clearances for nine other individuals, including the eight pictured.

Putin told reporters in Helsinki, while standing next to Trump, that he had wanted the former NY businessman to win the White House.

Beijing and Washington started a tit-for-tat trade war in July, each imposing 25 per cent tariffs on the other side's goods. Beijing retaliated by imposing the same percentage of retaliatory tariffs on 545 USA items, also worth $34 billion.
