Why Australia Is Getting Its Sixth Prime Minister In Just One Decade

Morrison, who was treasurer under outgoing prime minister Malcolm Turnbull, emerged the surprise victor in a three-way challenge for the leadership of the Liberal party brought on by a right-wing rival this week.

Morrison's tenure marks the the sixth prime minister change in Australia in about 11 years, continuing a trend of instability that has marked the country's politics in recent years.

"It has been such a privilege to be the leader of this great nation".

Born in Sydney in 1968, Mr Morrison has been Australia's Treasurer - the equivalent of the UK's Chancellor - since September 2015.

Mr Turnbull quit the job after he called for a spill of leadership positions in a Liberal partyroom meeting on Friday.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop is among the favorites and would be Australia's second female prime minister.

The new socially conservative leader of the country's Liberal party said last November, after 61% of Australians voted in favour of introducing marriage equality, that as many - if not more Australians - wanted to see laws introduced that would protect religious freedom.

The former prime minister was a frequent critic of Malcolm Turnbull, who rolled him for the top job barely three years ago, and was viewed as a destabilising force in the government's ranks.

Liberal party whip Nola Marino announced: "The successful candidate was Scott Morrison".

Former human services minister Michael Keenan, who switched his allegiance from Malcolm Turnbull to back Mr Dutton, does not expect to be returned to the ministry.
