4 people killed in Cincinnati shooting, including gunman

Suspect is dead. Three or four officers responded and engaged the shooter.

Police Chief Eliot Isaac said the gunman, identified as 29-year-old Omar Enrique Perez, began firing inside the building around 9:11 a.m., striking five victims before law enforcement arrived on scene. It's unclear if the gunman shot himself or was shot by officers, police said.

He killed three people, police said, and wounded two more. Hospital officials said two people died upon arrival while another is still in critical condition.

"There was definitely a lot of blood", an eyewitness, Zach Fritzhand, told the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Isaac said investigators looked at the 9mm handgun that Santa Perez bought legally in August and noticed it had jammed at some point. He entered the center's lobby through that shop, police said.

Mental health issues may be at play. "We're still trying to determine motive". Police Lt. Steve Saunders said he wasn't a current or past employee of Fifth Third, and police didn't know immediately why he went to that building.

Isaac said the rampage took place on the loading dock and then the lobby of the Fifth Third Center in the heart of downtown. There is a heavy police presence on the scene.

He lived in the Cincinnati area since about 2015, most recently in the nearby village of North Bend, Ohio, Isaac said.

He thanked first responders for doing a "heroic job".

Eric Kearney, president of the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky African American Chamber of Commerce, was in a board meeting across the street from the bank.

Sammarco posted Thursday on Facebook, asking how officials will explain to his parents "they will never see their son again because of a senseless shooting in a foreign country".

One was a longtime construction worker who was working in the building. "This is an American problem, that we as Americans must solve by putting ideology last and human life first", said Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley.

"No other industrialized country has this level of multiple active shootings on a regular basis, nearly on a daily basis", Cranley said.

Square and surrounding area will be closed to foot traffic. "And I'm thinking about how I can make a difference in the future", Austin said in the statement.

Newcomer, 64, was a superintendent for the Gilbrane Building Company who worked with tradespeople and was part of a project on the building's third floor, company spokesman Wes Cotter said. She said the gunman was so close she could smell the gunpowder as he fired. "We couldn't be more grief-stricken". As previously announced, two other victims received at UC Medical Center are deceased.

Leonard Cain told the Cincinnati Enquirer that he saw a woman wearing headphones get shot as she entered the building. "After that I started running".

The nearby area of Fountain Square has been closed off to foot traffic as the Cincinnati police and the FBI investigate the incident.

"Then we knew what was going on", Hanson said.
