Airplane passengers left bleeding from ears and nose after cabin pressure mistake

A cockpit mix-up left more than 30 passengers on an Indian plane bleeding from their ears and noses after the crew reportedly forgot to flick a switch regulating cabin air pressure.

Pilots operating a Jet Airways India flight on Thursday forgot to turn on a switch that maintains optimal pressure in the cabin during ascent, causing injuries to some passengers.

The flight heading to Jaipur, Rajastan state, was forced to returned to a Mumbai airport, with 30 passengers needing medical assistance.

All the passengers in flight were instructed to use the Emergency oxygen masks after the knowing that cabin pressure was lost. "Some of us experienced nose bleeding and headache", Darshak Hathi, a passenger said.

In light of the grave mistake the flight crew made, they have been suspended from their duties and are now pending investigation.

Another traveller said the pilot did not make any announcement other than the flight would turn back to Mumbai.

This is not the first time an incident involving Jet Airways has made the news.

Aircraft cabins are pressurized to replicate conditions that our bodies are used to on the ground.

Civil aviation minister Suresh Prabhu has asked the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) to conduct a probe into the incident.

A DGCA official said that the incident occurred after cabin pressure fell due to the fault of cockpit crew.

According to Flightradar24 aviation tracking site, the plane stopped climbing at 11,000 feet before returning to Mumbai.

"All guests were deplaned safely and taken to the terminal", the carrier said. The B737 aircraft, with 166 guests and five crew landed normally in Mumbai. The pictures showed oxygen masks being deployed for the passengers and a few passengers even posted pictures wearing safety gears. "First aid was administered to guests who complained of bleeding nose etc".

"The five patients, all males, have mild conductive deafness, a temporary condition which is likely to take a week or 10 days to heal".
