Apple just introduced a brand-new Apple Watch, the Apple Watch Series 4

The launch of larger watches and new iPhones also confirmed expectations that the company is making only minor changes to its line-up based on last year's iPhone X. The Apple Watch Nike+ experience is also available through Series 4 and there's a reflective woven loop.

Apple has used this to good effect, allowing more complications on the watch faces so you can see more information at a glance - it'll be interesting to see how long other apps are re-tooled to catch up and make properly good use of the display's extra space.

New dynamic watch faces interact with the side of the display. Because the watch models are both thinner, they take up less overall volume. Another is that the digital crown is now providing haptic feedback when turned, presumably to make it feel more natural, as if you're turning an actual mechanical element.

Instead of measuring blood flow, the Apple Watch can now detect the electrical activity of the wearer's heart, providing a far more accurate measurement of heart rate, even during vigorous exercise. No one wants a giant watch, after all. The watch will then let the user know whether their heart is beating in a healthy sinus pattern or exhibiting signs of atrial fibrillation.

We couldn't test that just yet - the feature isn't coming to the U.S. for a month or two, and the rest of the world later - so the basic heart rate monitor loked, well, basic.

"The ref gave a foul and personally I don't understand how it was a foul but these decisions happen and you have just got to move on", said Trippier.

Apple chief operating officer Jeff Williams, who introduced the next generation said the company had completely "re-engineered" the leading smartwatch, to become a medical device approved by America's Food and Drug Administration. The back of Series 4 is made of black ceramic and sapphire crystal, allowing radio waves to pass through the front and back of the device for improved cellular reception, he said. Well, Apple made it clear on stage that they will.

Apple studied natural falls and discovered repeatable patterns which can be analysed and diagnosed as a fall by the Series 4 chip. There's also a new accelerometer and gyroscope that Apple reckons can sample motion data up to eight times faster than Series 3. If it detects a fall, it will prompt you to call 911 if you need assistance. From detecting a fall the watch can prompt you to send an emergency alert, but if you're immobile for more than a minute it will call the emergency services and send a message to key contacts.

Apple today showed off its new Apple Watch Series 4, which sports a slimmer frame and display that's more than 30 percent larger than its predecessor. Despite the physical overhaul, Apple still managed to wedge in a battery that will remain consistent with the Series 3's 18 hours of usage on a charge. Apple Watch Series 4 will be available in silver, gold and space grey colours. Prices start at $399 for the cellular 40mm version - which will be carried by EE and Vodafone (the latter new for this edition).

The Series 4 can share heart-rhythm data - which is kept encrypted in the cloud - with physicians, he added.
