Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination process reflects the bitter partisanship of the age

She says that a small group of students were drinking at a home in suburban Maryland, and that Kavanaugh and a friend, Mark Judge, were heavily intoxicated.

WASHINGTON-Senate Republicans and Democrats began a week of delicate maneuvering Tuesday ahead of next week's scheduled testimony from Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and the woman who has accused him of sexual assault when they were teenagers.

Sen. Chuck Grassley, a Republican from Iowa, said on radio's Hugh Hewitt Show that he'd not yet received confirmation from the accuser that she would appear at Monday's hearing, despite several attempts to reach her. "How could we want to get the truth and not have Mr. Judge come to the hearing and be asked questions?" the New York Democrat said. So do they want to have the hearing or not?

He added that he doesn't believe the FBI should reopen Kavanaugh's background investigation, as Democrats have demanded. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., the ranking member (R), speaks during a Senate Judiciary Committee markup meeting on Capitol Hill, Sept. 13, 2018, in Washington.

"What really bothers me and gets me so angry is that the White Wouse is victimizing this person", she said.

"If Republicans attack Dr. Ford and this turns into anything like what we saw in 1991, women across the country are going to rise up and make their voice heard and Republicans will pay a very huge price", Murray said.

Mr Grassley had earlier stopped short of calling for a public hearing, or for delaying the committee's vote on Mr Kavanaugh which was originally planned for Thursday of this week.

The judge and his accuser, California research psychologist Christine Blasey Ford, are to be questioned publicly on the alleged episode from their youth - although Dr. Ford has yet to confirm that she will attend.

The agency's exhaustive background checks into Kavanaugh, as a Supreme Court nominee, were aimed at checking "whether the nominee could pose a risk to the national security of the United States", the Federal Bureau of Investigation said. The committee is expected to vote on Kavanaugh's nomination next week.

Oil prices steady after pull-back, up on the week
However, after crude oil prices increased in early 2016, investment and production began increasing later that year. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo was going to announce new sanctions on Iran .

Democrats who do not sit on the Judiciary Committee were also joining their colleagues' calls for the FBI to investigate before proceeding to a committee hearing.

While critics of the accusation have dismissed it as a "he said, she said", and argue that we have two competing accounts that simply can't be reconciled, that's increasingly not the case. It seems the main point of this press conference was to float the idea that maybe she shouldn't bother. Sen.

Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah, who is on the judiciary committee, said Republicans are "naturally" concerned about the optics of having only Republican men question Ford "because there's always a lot of prejudice in these matters".

Ford, a professor in clinical psychology at Palo Alto University, reluctantly came forward to tell her story, ultimately changing her life forever.

U.S. Representative Kevin Cramer, who is running against Heitkamp in North Dakota, said in a statement that he found it "hard not to be skeptical considering the timing and history of the allegations", according to the Grand Forks Herald. Ford told The Washington Post that Kavanaugh and his friend pushed her into a bedroom during a party and that Kavanaugh then forcibly pinned her down on a bed and tried to pull off her clothes.

If the Judiciary committee's timetable slips, it would become increasingly hard for Republicans to schedule a vote before midterm elections on November 6 elections, when congressional control will be at stake. The therapist's notes describe four boys being in the room in which the episode happened, rather than the two she now says were there.

Kavanaugh was seen Monday morning arriving at the White House, which has stood by the judge in the face of the accusations.

But Democrats on the panel said the entire process has been stacked against Ms. Blasey Ford.
