Huawei introduces world's first 5G-ready 7nm mobile chipset Kirin 980

This solution designates the large high-performance cores to handle immediate, intensive workloads; the large, high-efficiency cores to provide sustained performance; and ultra-efficiency cores to tackle every day, light activities with extreme power efficiency. "Equipped with all-new CPU, GPU and Dual NPU, the Kirin 980 is the ultimate engine to power the next-generation productivity and entertainment applications", Huawei Consumer Business Group CEO, Richard Yu said while announcing the Kirin 980 at IFA 2018.

Huawei has made a decision to keep its eagerly awaited Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro under wraps for a little while longer as it prepares for an exclusive event in London next month.

The Kirin 980 also features Cortex-A76 processor cores, which are 75% more powerful and 58% more efficient than previous generations. The Huawei Mate 20 series will be the first to come with company flagship Kirin 980 processor. The problem of scheduling that will result from three separate core clusters on the Kirin 980 will be managed by a new flexible scheduler. According to Huawei's testing, the Kirin 980 tallied an average frame rate of 59.3 FPS compare to 48.5 FPS for the Snapdragon 845. The Kirin 980 also has 6.9 billion transistors over a smaller die. The GPU will also use Huawei's GPU Turbo technology which can boost the GPU clock under heavy load, providing better gaming performance, Huawei claimed.

While the Huawei P20 Pro has impressive camera performance, it said it further improved the ISP on the new Kirin 980, giving it higher data throughput and better multi-camera support. Graphics are also handled by a new ARM-designed Mali-G76 processor that promises a 46 percent improvement over the previous generation. Huawei says the Kirin 980 is capable of recognizing 4,500 images per minute, a 120 percent improvement over the Kirin 970.

On the networking front, the Kirin 980 platform includes an LTE Cat.21 modem that delivers download speed of up to 1.4 Gbps. The devices in question will belong to Huawei's upcoming Mate 20 line-up with at least two phones, the Mate 20 and the Mate 20 Pro, expected to cram the latest mobile processor.
