I-95 remains closed by Florence’s flooding

Deadly Storm Florence moved across western North Carolina early this morning, dumping more rain on swollen rivers, flooded highways and homes, and threatening more lives as it heads toward Virginia and New England.

Hurricane Florence made landfall in North Carolina as a Category 1 storm and flooding from the heavy rain is forcing hundreds of people to call for emergency rescues in the area around New Bern, North Carolina, which sits at the confluence of the Nueces and Trent rivers.

"I can not overstate it: Floodwaters are rising, and if you aren't watching for them, you are risking your life", Governor Roy Cooper said.

The slow-moving storm, has dumped up to 91cm of rain on the state since Thursday, displacing thousands.

But with radar showing parts of the storm over six Southeastern states and flood worries spreading into southern Virginia and West Virginia, North and SC were still in the bull's-eye.

The death toll attributed to Florence stands at 17, including 11 in North Carolina and six in SC.

At least 17 people have died in North and SC, as rescuers in pulled residents from homes threatened by swollen rivers. Police guarded the door of one store, and only 10 people were allowed inside at a time.

The mother had driven around barricades on a stretch of road that had been closed, the post said.

Some 2,800 North Carolina National Guardsmen were actively aiding rescue and relief efforts Sunday with another 1,000 on standby.

Once a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 225 km/h, the hurricane was downgraded to a Category 1 on Thursday night. The storm's intensity diminished as it neared land, with winds dropping to about 90 miles per hour by nightfall.

All of those alerts have come as a result of rain bands from Florence, which continues to be a large storm despite recently being downgraded to a depression.

The state's Department of Transportation said it's not clear how long that road will stay open, so authorities are trying to rush in supplies.

Record flooding was also reported at Little River in Manchester, North Carolina, which had the highest flood level in the region, and the only river to have a water level above 30 feet as of Monday morning.

Hurricane Florence continues to rip through the Carolinas in the U.S. today, wreaking destruction and causing widespread flooding and infrastructural damage. "Flood waters are rising as rivers crest and they will for days".

Thousands of people were ordered to evacuate homes along rivers.

County commission Chairman Woody White said officials were planning for food and water to be flown into the coastal city, located on a peninsula with the rising Cape Fear River to the west and more water to the east. "They have not even begun (to crest)".

"That's a decision I had to make", he said.

It could be months before the number of fatalities caused by Florence and Typhoon Mangkhut to be fully known, and it's common for these kinds of tallies to sharply escalate as officials take account of the deaths indirectly caused by a storm.

The industrial-scale farms contain vast pits of animal feces and urine that can pose a significant pollution threat if they are breached or inundated by floodwaters. "It's worrying to watch the water slowly rising".
