Kavanaugh Would Testify Against Sexual Assault Allegation

President Donald Trump on Monday defended Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh after a woman accused him of sexually assaulting her when the two were in high school, praising him as "one of the finest people" and signaling that he supports a proposed hearing on the allegations.

"You and your staff scheduled a public hearing for her to testify at the same table as Judge Kavanaugh in front of two dozen US senators on national television to relive this traumatic and harrowing incident", Ford's legal team wrote to Grassley.

Initially the sexual misconduct allegation was conveyed in a private letter, without revealing Ford's name.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, said in a statement early Monday afternoon that Ford "deserves to be heard" but stopped short of committing to a public airing that would likely force a delay of a planned committee vote on Thursday.

"We got to take these examples of sexual assault very seriously, and she's charged him, and we also have a request from Kavanaugh that he wants to give his side of the story", Grassley told reporters.

In the Post article, Ford alleged that while at a party during their high school years, Kavanaugh pushed her into a bedroom along with his friend Mark Judge, attempted to remove her clothes and put his hand over her mouth when she tried to scream.

Kavanaugh has denied the allegations.

There's more: Senator Patrick Leahy, who has served in the Senate for 44 years, 20 years as the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, says Kavanaugh misled the Senate during his 2006 confirmation for a judgeship to the D.C. Circuit Court. The White House issued a statement from Kavanaugh denying the allegations. "Because this never happened, I had no idea who was making this accusation until she identified herself yesterday".

Chuck Grassley told reporters Wednesday the Senate Judiciary Committee will investigate sexual-assault allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

Judge denied the allegation in an interview with The Weekly Standard on Friday. The 53-year-old judge was there to meet with the White House legal team to prepare for potential interviews or questions from the Senate Judiciary Committee, a source familiar with the matter said.

"Unfortunately, committee Republicans have only known this person's identity from news reports for less than 24 hours and known about her allegations for less than a week", Grassley said. Moderates in both parties including pivotal Republican Senator Susan Collins and Democratic Senator Joe Manchin said Kavanaugh and Ford should be given the chance to testify before the committee, a move that could delay the confirmation process.

"She believes that if it were not for the severe intoxication of Brett Kavanaugh, she would have been raped", Katz told NBC's "Today".

"The Minority withheld even the anonymous allegations for six weeks, only to later decide that they were serious enough to investigate on the eve of the committee vote, after the vetting process had been completed", he added.

"I really think it". "For me, we can't vote until we hear more".

Democrats are insisting that the FBI handle the matter by reopening Kavanaugh's background investigation rather having committee staff make calls.

"He is somebody very special", Trump said of his nominee."At the same time, we want to go through a process".

Three red-state Democrats, Sens. Ford's husband, Russell Ford, said he recalled his wife using Kavanaugh's last name and expressing concern that Kavanaugh - then a federal judge - might someday be nominated to the Supreme Court.

Ford detailed her story in a letter sent to Feinstein in July. September 17: Katz said Ford would be willing to speak publicly with lawmakers as key senators voiced interest in delaying a vote on Kavanaugh's nomination.
