Local woman stays in North Carolina despite arrival of Hurricane Florence

Hurricane Florence strengthened a bit, but then tapped on the brakes as it approached the North Carolina coast Thursday evening.

At least 150,000 people were without power in North Carolina early on Friday with the brunt of the storm yet to come, according to utility companies.

"We're recommending people to stay here".

Roughly 1 million people are under evacuation orders.

Being such a small number, first responders have made clear to them the situation when the storm makes its expected complete landfall by 8 a.m. Friday morning. She said a hurricane has a way of bringing everyone to the same level.

The NHC warned the threat of tornadoes was increasing as Florence neared shore and South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster said the heavy rain could trigger landslides in the west of his state.

Winds bent trees toward the ground and raindrops flew sideways as Florence moved in for an extended stay, with enough of its killer winds swirling overseas to maintain its power.

Roberts, the city spokeswoman, said Friday preliminary estimates show about 4,300 residences and 300 commercial buildings had been damaged.

"Now we just have to figure out how to get hot coffee", said Mary Holland, standing on the porch of her home that was built in 1889.

Pot-smoking Canadians to be barred from US
Thousands of Canadians have invested in the cannabis companies, which are publicly traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange. Enenajor said pot users and people connected to the industry are considered "inadmissible aliens" under USA law.

Meanwhile, lane reversals on US 501 in the Grand Strand ended at noon Thursday and reversals on I-26 ended Thursday night, allowing state police and transportation workers to get to safety before the storm hits.

About 1.7 million people in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia are under voluntary or mandatory evacuation orders and millions of others live in areas likely to be affected by what officials called a "once in a lifetime" storm.

He said: "I could be wrong. Today the threat becomes a reality".

"We're a little anxious about the storm surge so we came down to see what the river is doing now", said Linda Smith, 67, a retired nonprofit director.

Cooper said Florence was set to cover nearly all of North Carolina in several feet of water.

Although Florence has been downgraded from a category four to a category two storm, North Carolina governor Roy Cooper warned: "Don't relax, don't get complacent".

Curfews being imposed by Conway, North Myrtle Beach and Horry County, which includes all unincorporated areas of the county, are in effect from 7 p.m.to 7 a.m. beginning Thursday and continuing until further notice. While most golf courses in the Myrtle Beach area were open within two weeks of Hurricane Matthew in 2016, Florence could be different because it's forecast to deliver a 13-foot (4-meter) ocean surge and flooding rains. Several airlines are allowing customers impacted by the hurricane to book flights again without paying additional fees but some fliers say that does not make finding flights any easier. "The infrastructure's going to break, the power's going to go out. but we are going to do everything that we can to push forward as quickly as we can to get things back up and working".

Some evacuees who've been displaced since Tuesday were increasingly growing impatient and anxious as reports about where the storm would hit, and how hard, have changed. Forecasters said the onslaught could last for days, leaving a wide area under water from both heavy downpours and rising seas.

Most of the damage during Hurricane Matthew in 2016 in North Carolina came from inland flooding - 31 people died and almost 100,000 homes were destroyed.
