More than 870,000 without power as Florence lumbers inland

More than 870,000 without power as Florence lumbers inland

Despite the downgrade, Florence is expected to produce catastrophic flooding throughout the Carolinas. It's an evacuation 'encouragement, ' " said Hannah Moldenhauer, a spokeswoman for Berkeley County, South Carolina, which is under mandatory evacuation. Hurricane-force winds are expected to spread to parts of the coast Friday.

Keith Acre of North Carolina's Department of Emergency Management said: "This has been a really large evacuation and sheltering operation, probably the largest we've done, so that has not been an east lift". It is moving northwest at 6 miles per hour.

The storm's center was about 108 miles (173 km) east of Wilmington, North Carolina, at 3 p.m. EDT (1900 GMT) but already some 19,000 homes and businesses were without power by mid-afternoon in the Carolinas and Virginia.

It was forecast to make landfall mid-day Friday near Cape Fear, North Carolina, bringing up to 40 inches (1 meter) of rain, and storm surges as high as 13 feet (4 meters), the NHC said. "Florence will then recurve across the western Carolinas and the central Appalachian Mountains early next week". Sixty-one shelters have opened in SC - 12 designated for evacuees with special medical needs - able to accommodate more than 31,000 additional people.

Storm surge and hurricane warnings were issued for most of the North and SC coastline.

"It's going to be a lot of wind".

"The only reason we're still here is because we have a 7-month-old baby with us", she said.

Workers are being brought in from the Midwest and Florida to help in the storm's aftermath, it said.

In Jacksonville, North Carolina, next to Camp Lejeune, firefighters and police fought wind and rain as they went door-to-door to pull people out of the Triangle Motor Inn after the structure began to crumble and the roof started to collapse. In some counties, almost 1 in 3 people live below the poverty line.

Amazon's Jeff Bezos unveils $2B philanthropic fund
Bezos added: "But it is really unsafe to demonize the media". "It's also the social norms that protect us". In a statement , Amazon called the vote "the right decision for the region's economic prosperity".

About 800 flights in the region have been canceled ahead of the storm, CNN reported.

Hurricane Florence's path could affect the homes of more than 5 million people, and more than 1 million of them have been ordered to evacuate.

Virginia and Georgia are also under states of emergency, but it's North and SC that are positioned to suffer the worst of the storm's wrath.

Utility crews had largely stopped stringing power lines during the peak of the storm and said they would not resume restoring power until wind speeds subsided and flood waters receded, which could take several areas in the hardest-hit areas.

Florence has been bearing down on the Carolinas for days, and it has expanded in size, with tropical-storm-force winds extending almost 200 miles from the storm's eye. "Catastrophic effects will be felt". The height of the water that we will see on the coast is the amount of storm surge plus the tide and any additional rain water. Kilbourne said the houses sit 18 to 30 feet above sea level, so they were not anxious about the storm surge.

Young and his team of scientists including Katie Peek and Blair Tormey built the database which tracks all storm surge levels since the 1800s.

The size of a hurricane's storm surge does not factor into the category of a storm.

"The worst of the storm is not yet here but these are early warnings of the days to come", he said.

"If it was a Category Four and we were going to get a direct hit, yes, we wouldn't be here". Southeast, is expected to make landfall in the coming hours.

Tropical Storm Isaac is also moving westward across the eastern Caribbean. And according to meteorologists, the rainfall in parts of North Carolina could exceed three feet with Florence.
