Mother wonders if race factored into Dallas police officer fatally shooting son

Police intend to seek a warrant against the Dallas officer who shot and killed 26-year-old Botham Jean on Thursday night when she entered his apartment, apparently mistaking it for her own.

A statement from the Dallas Police Department indicates the altercation occurred just before 10 p.m.as the officer - who has not been named - was returning from her full shift.

Guyger was involved in another shooting incident in May 2017, when a suspect took her taser, according to a Dallas Police Department press release. Police said they are unsure what happened between the two but at some point, she fired her weapon and struck Jean.

Authorities haven't said how the officer got into Jean's home, or whether his door was open or unlocked. While still in uniform, she told authorities she mistakenly walked into Jean's apartment in an upscale complex near downtown Dallas.

Afamily has been plunged into mourning following the horrific and untimely death of their kin, Botham Shem Jean, a Saint Lucian man who resided in Dallas, Texas.

The officer's blood was drawn to be tested for drugs and alcohol.

Attorney Lee Merritt, who has been involved with high-profile cases in North Texas, said Friday the officer should have already been arrested, like any other person in a similar situation.

"The ball is in their court", Hall said during a criminal justice panel Saturday afternoon.

"We're all deeply grieved", spokeswoman Jana Rucker said. How can this nasty world take you away from me?

After excelling in high school, she said, her son left the island about seven years ago to study accounting and management information systems at Harding University before he was offered the job in Dallas.

"The culture of policing that has emerged in Black communities all across America is one where cops shoot to kill first, then ask questions after", Burke said, adding "police officers are killing Black men while walking innocently on the streets, driving innocently in our cars and now while living innocently in our own home".

In a related post, his mother said: "My son, I love you".

"We hope to bring understanding to the family", she said.

Harding President Bruce McClarty remembered how he once asked Jean to lead the chapel in a hymn that Jean had never heard before, according to reporting from the Christian Chronicle.

Tracy Moore, a preacher who knew Jean from a Church of Christ Caribbean lecture series, told The Christian Chronicle that Jean was a powerful singer who always had "a spirit of joy that flowed from him".

"Right now there are more questions than answers", Chief Hall said.

Jean, a native of St Lucia, was listed on LinkedIn as a risk assurance experienced associate at PricewaterhouseCoopers.
