Nadal Fights Back Georgian Tennis Star in US Open

Defending champion Rafael Nadal reached Sunday the US Open quarterfinals for the eighth time where he will face Dominic Thiem, one of only three men to defeat him in 2018.

It is likely to be another tough battle and it would not be a surprise if it goes the distance, but expect the number one seed to prevail.

His victory against the world number one in the Madrid semi-finals ended Nadal's 50-set clay win streak which began after the Austrian had beaten him in Rome 12 months earlier.

Said Nadal: "It's a different kind of match than clay but is still a tennis match".

He was agonizingly close to getting there a year ago at the US Open, leading by two sets against del Potro in the round of 16 before the 2009 champion roared back to win. "Still a lot of tennis to be played, a lot to play for", said Anderson. "Seems like I was not in control of the point even when I was hitting good shots", he added.

Instead, it will be the ninth-seeded Thiem who will face Nadal in the quarterfinals after the Spaniard took four sets to get past Georgia's Nikoloz Basilashvili.

"One of my best matches ever", Thiem said of his dazzling performance in an on-court interview, calling his quarter-final berth "a dream coming true".

Basilashvili only managed to convert two of his seven break point opportunities and committed 59 unforced errors to Nadal's 19 on a partly cloudy day at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

It's an accomplishment for Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos, who is the world's wealthiest person. Amazon and Apple are now worth more than the economies of countries such as Turkey and Switzerland.

Dominic Thiem has eliminated 2017 U.S. Open finalist Kevin Anderson with a 7-5, 6-2, 7-6 (2) victory in the fourth round.

"He's a fantastic player".

With the mercury hitting 35C and humidity at about 50 per cent, the US Tennis Association invoked its new extreme heat policy, which allowed the players to take a 10-minute break after the third set -while officials called a halt to junior matches on the outside courts for more than two hours. Happy for him that he's in quarter-finals here. But in terms of the side of a champion, I don't know.

Georgian Basilashvili had won just a single game against Nadal in their only previous meeting at the French Open past year, but played superbly here to take a set before going down 6-3 6-3 6-7 (6/8) 6-4 after three hours and 18 minutes.

Third-seeded del Potro made the last-eight for the sixth time against Croatian 20th seed Coric who was playing in his maiden last 16 of a Slam.

Men's third round: No. 2 Roger Federer beat No. 30 Nick Kyrgios 6-4, 6-1, 7-5; Philipp Kohlschreiber beat No. 4 Alexander Zverev 6-7 (1), 6-4, 6-1, 6-3; Joao Sousa beat No. 17 Lucas Pouille 7-6 (5), 4-6, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5).

Del Potro was on Sunday's night schedule, facing Borna Coric. "I needed to use all of it today".

"I think that moment was the key of the match", Del Potro said in an on-court interview. "So I'm always progressing, this year, every year". I'm feeling really good.
