Over 300,000 British Airways travelers' credit cards hacked

Over 300,000 British Airways travelers' credit cards hacked

British Airways has warned customers that around 380,000 card payments on its website and app were compromised during a 15-day data breach.

Cutomers are being urged to contact their card providers as a huge investigation begins into the hack.

British Airways will pay compensation to customers whose data was been stolen by a "sophisticated" and "malicious" hacking attack, its boss said Friday (Sep 7).

The company's chairman and chief executive, Alex Cruz, said: "We are deeply sorry for the disruption that this criminal activity has caused".

British Airways has said it will contact customers and will manage any claims "on an individual basis". "The stolen data did not include travel or passport details", it added.

The breach covered customers who made bookings between 21 August and 5 September, IAG said.

Tropical Storm Gordon: Seventh named storm forms near South Florida
Miami Beach Police said via Twitter that the Labor Day holiday was "NOT a beach day", with rough surf and potential rip currents. The National Hurricane Center in Miami said Monday that Tropical Storm Gordon is likely to batter the region with heavy rains .

Anyone who believes they may have been affected should contact their banks and credit-card providers.

The company noted that the breach has since been resolved and that it's "notified the police and relevant authorities". It added that no future bookings will be affected.

"We are working with partners to better understand this incident and how it has affected customers", a spokesperson said. Customers due to travel can check in online as normal. But what you do after you call the bank? "Unfortunately, this is likely to be another PR disaster for British Airways, especially as it includes tickets bought in their September sale which is being widely promoted at the moment".

Will I have to get a new card?

And in May 2017, British Airways suffered a major computer system failure triggered by a power supply issue near Heathrow which left 75,000 customers stranded.
