States Prepare for ‘Storm of a Lifetime’ as Hurricane Florence Looms

Fears about Hurricane Florence spread south on Wednesday, with Georgia declaring a state of emergency after officials in the Carolinas urged people to evacuate the coast ahead of the storm's expected pounding winds and rain-driven floods.

Hurricane Florence is blasting toward the Carolinas, carrying sustained winds of up to 130 miles per hour and the threat of "life-threatening storm surge and rainfall", the National Hurricane Center says.

"This is not a storm that people need to ride out", Cooper told reporters. "Don't bet your life on riding out a monster".

As of now, Florence is due to make landfall very early Friday morning, somewhere in the Carolinas.

And he had advice for coastal residents. The storm will bring dangerously high amounts of rain, forecasters say.

'And that's saying a lot given the impacts we've seen from Hurricanes Diana, Hugo, Fran, Bonnie, Floyd and Matthew.

More than 10 million people were under storm watches and warnings on Wednesday as Hurricane Florence - described as "the storm of a lifetime" - continued to drive its way to the East Coast.
