Trump's Puerto Rico tweets draw bipartisan fire in Florida

Trump's Puerto Rico tweets draw bipartisan fire in Florida

President Donald Trump tours a neighborhood impacted by Hurricane Maria, Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2017, in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico.

In a news conference Thursday, Ryan said he had "no reason to dispute" a study from George Washington University, commissioned by the Puerto Rican government, that concluded 2,975 people perished as a result of the hurricane, more than 4,500 percent higher than the original estimate of 64 people.

Rossello said Puerto Ricans "do not deserve to have their pain questioned" and backed the study. By increasing the official death toll, he is not just making Trump look bad - he is making himself look bad, too, not only for possible mismanagement of the hurricane response but also for releasing such unrealistically low fatality figures initially. "Then, a long time later, they started to report really large numbers".

His comments came before Trump tweeted Thursday a recent official report putting Puerto Rico's death toll from 2017's Hurricane Maria at almost 3,000, was wrong and "done by the Democrats in order to make me look as bad as possible".

The Puerto Rican government officially accepted the hurricane death toll at 2,675, but President Trump calls the number phony.

Below is a list of studies that have estimated the death toll there.

A United States government report published this month concluded that the federal response in Puerto Rico was hampered by a lack of trained staff as well as by major logistical challenges.

This tweet, apparently, did not sit well with hundreds of Trump supporters, who proceeded to attack Scott for defying President Trump and citing official data.

Cruz maintains the federal government's response to the hurricane was slow and inadequate while Trump said it was a success.

Kerala nuns join public protest demanding arrest of bishop
Catholic reformation organisations, including the Kerala Catholic Church Reformation Movement (KCRM), took part in the protest. Across Kerala, anger is rising that law enforcement has yet to arrest the bishop, despite multiple accounts against him.

"This is what denial following neglect looks like", declared San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz in response to Trump's tweets. In recent days, Trump publicly lauded his own administration's response to Maria - and privately groused over storm-related news coverage that he saw as overly focused on Puerto Rico, according to two Republican advisers close to the White House who weren't authorized to speak publicly. We've seen conflicting information associated with the process of coming up with a realistic accounting of how many people died during and after the storm.

"I disagree with @POTUS- an independent study said thousands were lost and Gov. (Ricardo) Rosselló agreed", Gov. Rick Scott tweeted.

Cora stressed that last point, saying he didn't view the issue as political.

'I'm confident that those that needed those bottles of water got them during the response phase and these were excess bottles of water that were, again, transferred to save money for the American taxpayer in January, ' Kaniewski said.

The mayor of Puerto Rico's capital accused Trump of being "delusional". The parties are courting Puerto Rican voters who are longtime residents of Florida, as well as those who relocated to the state after Maria caused devastating damage to the USA territory last September.

With his comments on Thursday, Trump didn't just kick a hornets nest - instead, he bludgeoned it with a barbed-wire baseball bat and outrage exploded across Twitter. It was conducted by the nonpartisan George Washington University's Milken Institute School of Public Health.

The president has not provided any evidence for his claim that Democrats inflated the number and has been criticized on both the right and the left for it.

President Donald Trump talks on the phone aboard Air Force One during a flight to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to address a joint gathering of House and Senate Republicans, Thursday, January 26, 2017.
