Aussie cricket chief faces flak after critical report

Steve Smith and David Warner have been given a ban up to a year, which means they will be eligible to play all forms of cricket from April 2019.

Speed said Taylor - who captained the Test side between 1994 and his retirement in 1999 - is an "outstanding man" that has "lived and breathed Australian cricket", and would be a solid fit as the next chairman should Peever resign.

The Australian Cricketers Association yesterday confirmed a report in The Daily Telegraph that they would lodge an official submission with Cricket Australia for the bans to be revised and possibly even scrapped on the "new evidence" exposed in the cultural review.

CA chairman David Peever said there is no chance that Smith and Warner will be available to return to worldwide or domestic cricket before April 2019, while Bancroft will remain banned until next January.

"Given this, there must be a reconsideration of the harshness of the penalties handed down to Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft", it added, calling for the bans to be reduced.

"The players have already lost time in the game, chances to play for Australia, endured public humiliation and face massive financial penalties", Dyer said.

It also found the Cricket Australia culture to be "arrogant" and "dictatorial" and accused the organisation of "bullying" in a 145-page document released on Monday.

The review was non-binding but he said he was considering the report's 42 recommendations, including an anti-harassment code to stop sledging and training to improve team leaders' "moral courage".

The report said the governing body was perceived as "arrogant" and "controlling" and treated its elite players like commodities, allowing "alpha-male" egos to develop a win-at-all-costs approach.

Former captain Smith, coach Darren Lehman, chief executive James Sutherland and high-performance manager Pat Howard have all moved on or announced their intent to move on.

Pakistan's key stock index jumped 3.8 percent on Wednesday and the rupee gained as much as 1 percent against the dollar. Pakistan is to return the $3 billion after one year, but the terms are apparently negotiable.

Deep divisions in Australian cricket, as epitomised by the 2017 MoU dispute and ongoing squabbles between the state associations and CA, are emphasised by the fact that the most positive responses to the review came from board directors and senior management, while the most negative emanated from the ACA, the players and the states and territories.

In their first Test series since the ball-tampering scandal erupted in South Africa, Australia were beaten by Pakistan earlier this month.

"At Cricket Australia our objective is to unite and inspire communities through cricket", he said. "The other thing is there's indications in there around how negative feedback is not well taken [by CA] and in some cases players decided they didn't want to do it and referred through us, and we compiled an appropriate submission".

Months of their bans the three Australian cricketers have served.

"You've got to be ahead of the game and know what the problems are and how they can be fixed".

"If the culture was better, and the relationship between the players and the CA was better, there may well have been a different response".

"Just play good, hard, fair cricket & win a few games is all that's required ...!"

"But I think that's missing at the moment, that the dyed-in-the-wool cricket people need to stand up and take back their sport", he said.
