Eighth child dies at New Jersey rehabilitation facility

An adenovirus outbreak at a New Jersey pediatric rehabilitation center has left nine children dead, officials said on Sunday Oct. 28.

A general look of the marquee outside of the Wanaque Center For Nursing And Rehabilitation, where New Jersey state Health Department confirmed the 18 cases of adenovirus, Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2018, in Haskell, N.J. The outbreak has left six children dead and 12 others sick.

There have been 25 cases associated with the outbreak.

The teams will assess infection prevention practices and deploy beginning in November, according to Health Commissioner Dr. Shereef Elnahal.

Health officials found minor hand-washing deficiencies at the facility during visits last week, and have been working with the center on infection-control issues, the health department said.

The agency said the most recent individual became sick on or before October 22, which remains the last day when a patient showed new symptoms. "The strain has been particularly associated with disease in communal living arrangements and can be more severe", the department said in a statement.

Twenty-five pediatric cases of adenovirus have been connected to the outbreak at this facility, officials said.

The facility is still not admitting any new patients and won't until the outbreak is over. And for most patients, only home remedies and over-the-counter medicines to relieve symptoms are needed.

Adenovirus is a family of viruses that typically impact young children and usually cause only mild illness, according to the Health Department.

In a review by the government's Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Wanaque was awarded an above-average ranking in overall quality but was given a below-average health inspection rating.

Adenoviruses, of which there are 52 different strains, are common causes of respiratory illnesses and most infections aren't severe, according to the CDC.

The outbreak, caused by adenovirus type 7, "is affecting medically fragile children with severely compromised immune systems". Symptoms include the common cold, sore throat, bronchitis, pneumonia, diarrhea, pink eye, and fever and bladder infections.
