Facebook says hackers accessed data of 29 million users

In the company's statement, it said, "we're cooperating with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which is actively investigating and asked us not to discuss who may be behind this attack".

The attackers who carried out the mass hack that Facebook disclosed two weeks ago obtained user account data belonging to as many as 30 million users, the social network said on Friday.

The 30 million affected users will see customized messages on the Facebook app and website to let them know what info of theirs was stolen, and the company's Help Center has also been updated with new information about the attack.

Hackers could have taken information like names and contact details like phone numbers and email addresses from 15 million Facebook users, Rosen said.

On Friday, the company's vice president of product management Guy Rosen said "fewer people were impacted than we originally thought", with access tokens stolen from around 30 million accounts.

Facebook says the attack didn't impact Messenger, Messenger Kids, Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus, Workplace, Pages, payments, third-party apps, or advertising or developer accounts.

Rosen said they found no reason yet to believe hackers were in interested in people's information, rather that it appeared the mission was to harvest access tokens from friends associated with breached accounts.

Other 15 million users had their names and contact information breached, and 1 million users exclusively had their access tokens stolen; Facebook has reset the access tokens for all of those users.

Ultimately, they stole sensitive personal information from 14 million accounts, including birth dates, recent search history and the last 10 locations where users were tagged.

Asked whether Facebook would pay for some kind of identity theft monitoring service for affected users - as breached companies often do - a spokeswoman said: "Not at this time".

Major League Baseball declined comment, spokesman Mike Teevan said. He was awful behind the plate today; he's bad at first base". On Tuesday, Hernandez will shift behind the plate .

Facebook isn't giving a breakdown of where these users are, but says the breach was "fairly broad".

Beginning with a set of accounts controlled by the attackers, the exploit jumped from friends of those users to friends of friends, ballooning to the eventual total of 30 million accounts via an automated script.

Users can visit the Facebook "Help Centre", to see whether they were affected and what information was stolen, including the last ten places they checked in, their hometown and last ten searches they made. If you were, it will list the information of yours that was accessed.

Using these initial accounts, the attacker used a bug in Facebook's code relating to a the "View As" feature to access the profiles of friends, which it believes existed since July a year ago.

It said its statutory investigation into the breach, and Facebook's compliance with its obligations under GDPR, was continuing.

Additionally, Facebook advises people to be wary of unwanted phone calls, text messages and emails. There are a series of different variations depending on how much data was taken from your account when it is accessed.

And for 1 million affected users, the hackers did not access any information.

Facebook patched the issue last month and asked 90 million users to log back into their accounts, many just as a precaution.

Once they had keys to accounts, hackers had the ability to get into them and control them as though they were the real owner.
