Hurricane Michael strengthens into Category 2 storm with 100 miles per hour winds

"If you live along some of these rivers, you have to think the waters are going to come up there".

"We are running out of time", Scott said in a post on Twitter. "This is the real thing, a significant threat to life and safety".

"I am concerned about the cone of uncertainty as Hurricane Michael is leaning west today", Alabama Emergency Management Agency Director Brian Hastings said in a statement Monday. "There's nothing between us and this storm but warm water' and I think that's what terrifies us about the potential impacts".

It made landfall on the coast as a Category 1 hurricane on Sep 14 and drenched some parts of the state with 40 inches of rain.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey signed an emergency declaration for her entire state, expecting widespread power outages and other problems from Michael. The Florida Panhandle, southeast Alabama, and southern Georgia will see 4 to 8 inches of rain, with isolated areas facing up to 12 inches, the National Hurricane Center said.

NWS forecasters also warned of a high rip current risk along the Grand Strand Tuesday. Some of Michael's moisture will be drawn northward, meaning periods of rain for us Thursday.

"It's expected to become a Category 3 storm - a major hurricane".

Global analytics firm CoreLogic estimates that the total reconstruction value if all these homes were actually destroyed by what's forecast to be a Category 3 hurricane - winds up to 129 miles per hour - could amount to $13.4 billion.

Hurricane Michael was expected to strengthen on Tuesday in the Gulf of Mexico, taking aim at the Florida panhandle, where residents were implored to get out of harm's way ahead of life-threatening waves, winds and rains.

Hurricane conditions are expected within the hurricane warning area along the U.S. Gulf Coast by Wednesday, with tropical storm conditions expected by tonight or early Wednesday.

Hurricane warnings are in effect from the Alabama/Florida state line to the Suwanee River along Florida's Big Bend. "When high winds and low pressure cause water to amass inside the storm, they release a powerful rush over land when the hurricane moves onshore", CoreLogic said in a statement.

Speaking alongside emergency officials in Pasco County, Scott said Monday he's waiving tolls.

Florida State University said its campuses in Tallahassee and Panama City will be closed from Tuesday to Friday. Storm surge rises rapidly Wednesday morning and afternoon. The county offers storm preparation resources on its website. Residents of this Florida panhandle city were busy Monday readying themselves for Hurricane Michael, which is predicted to make landfall somewhere around Panama City, Fla.

The Florida Disaster website on October 9 said that parts or all of Bay County, Citrus County, Franklin County, Dixie County, Gulf County, Jackson County, Levy County, Okaloosa County, Taylor County, Wakulla County, and Walton County have mandatory evacuation orders.

In the small Panhandle city of Apalachicola, Mayor Van Johnson Sr. said the 2,300 residents are frantically preparing for a major hurricane strike that could be unlike any seen there in decades.

The sheriff's office says Wakulla County shelters were rated safe only for hurricanes below that threshold.

Authorities told residents and tourists in at least 20 Florida counties to evacuate coastal areas along the 200-mile (322 km) long Panhandle and adjacent Big Bend region.
