US Senate heads to final vote on Kavanaugh Supreme Court nomination

In a crucial procedural vote along partisan lines, the U.S. Senate on Friday wrapped up the debate on the confirmation of a highly controversial Brett Kavanaugh, President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee, moving forward to the final floor vote.

"He's clearly a learned judge, but in my conscience, because that's how I have to vote at the end of the day, with my conscience, I could not conclude that he is the right person for the court at this time", she said during a speech on the Senate floor on October 5.

Senator Susan Collins - a maverick member of Trump's Republican party - and her Democrat counterpart Joe Manchin said allegations that Brett Kavanaugh had sexually assaulted a fellow teenager almost four decades ago were unproven.

Sen. Flake confirmed to reporters Thursday that there was "no new corroborative information" in the Federal Bureau of Investigation report on sexual allegations against Judge Kavanaugh.

Kavanaugh's path to the court seemed unfettered until mid-September, when Ford accused him of drunkenly sexually assaulting her in a locked bedroom at a 1982 high school gathering.

Kavanaugh's nomination has been imperiled by accusations of sexual misconduct.

Senator Jeff Flake, one of the few Republicans who had expressed doubts about Mr Kavanaugh, said he would back the judge unless something big changed, MSNBC reported.

The announcements Friday by Republican Susan Collins of ME and Democrat Joe Manchin of West Virginia came after weeks of shocking accusations, hardball politics and Capitol protests.

One closely-watched potential Democratic swing vote - Sen.

Melania Trump visits former slave outpost in Ghana
First lady Trump was given a demonstration of how the hospital weighs babies during wellness checks in a sack-and-pully system. In addition to Ghana, she is due to visit Malawi, Kenya and Egypt before returning to Washington early on Oct 7.

Democrats assailed the probe as an incomplete vetting constrained by a White House determined to push through the lifetime appointment of Trump's man.

This is ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee Dianne Feinstein.

It's actually been in session throughout the night covering the issue, although the debate has taken place in a largely empty chamber. His combative and at times downright angry performance drew criticism that Kavanaugh lacked the unbiased, judicious demeanor needed to sit on the high court. She told reporters Friday that Kavanaugh is "a good man" but maybe "not the right man for the court at this time".

Manchin, a red-state Democrat, earlier also voted yes to advance Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to a vote in the full Senate. Deborah Ramirez, a second accuser who said Kavanaugh exposed himself to her while the two attended Yale University, voiced similar frustration. The office of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said it is trying to figure out what to do. I'm glad that Dr. Ford was heard, I'm glad that Judge Kavanaugh was heard.

Even before the lurid sexual assault charges surfaced, Democrats in the Republican-controlled Senate were fighting hard to stop Mr Kavanaugh, saying his conservative judicial philosophy could result in rolling back abortion rights, gay rights and protections for immigrants. "Threats or other attempts to bully her will not play a factor in her decision making whatsoever", Annie Clark said in a statement before the senator announced her support for Kavanaugh.

"We would have to investigate any credible allegations of perjury and other things that haven't been properly looked into before", he said.

A final vote has been set for Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to the Supreme Court.

"I think Judge Kavanaugh is a qualified individual and, while I am respectful of Professor Ford, I don't think the evidence is there to corroborate her claims", Kolbe said.
