Week Ahead: Kavanaugh Confirmed, Sworn In - And What Comes Next

Senate Judiciary Committee Democrats gave a global platform 11 days ago to Christine Blasey Ford, who accused Kavanaugh of forcibly groping her and trying to undress her when they were both teenagers.

As he departed the White House, Trump lauded Kavanaugh as a "brilliant jurist" and blamed Democrats for the focus on decades-old allegations of sexual misconduct that dominated debate in the weeks before the nominee's Senate confirmation at the weekend.

"On behalf of the nation, I'd like to apologize to Brett and the entire Kavanaugh family for the awful pain and suffering you've been forced to endure", Trump said, acknowledging that his words were "unusual".

Republican President Rutherford Hayes' nominee William Woods was confirmed 39-8 by a Democrat-controlled Senate in 1880. Kamala Harris turned up in politically important Ohio, where she reminded more than 1,000 of the party faithful at the Ohio Democratic Party's fall fundraising dinner that she walked out of the Kavanaugh proceedings at one point because they had become "a sham and a disgrace".

The election is suddenly layered with charged cultural questions about the scarcity of women in political power, the handling of sexual assault allegations, and shifting power dynamics that have left some white men uneasy about their place in American life.

Kavanaugh, along with his law clerks, already has been at the Supreme Court preparing for his first day on the bench Tuesday when the justices will hear arguments in two cases about longer prison terms for repeat offenders.

Trump reaffirms support for embattled Brett Kavanaugh after a fiery hearing.

"All these angry people out there, they know that it is the people who are sitting in the Senate that they've elected who are making these decisions and they're going to go to the polls and they're going to vote differently", warned Sen.

He added that he wasn't personally involved in speaking to Trump or Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on the issue of Kavanaugh's confirmation. "He's a flawless person".

On Saturday, the Senate voted 50-48 in Kavanaugh's favor, with Sen. The best student, the best scholar, the great intellect, incredible record over many years, and yet he's a young man.

"Maybe I have this wrong, but when you blocked Merrick Garland's nomination from President Obama you basically said we don't do this in a presidential election year and that we wait until the election", Wallace said. "We toughed it out together".

Trump has a busy campaign schedule to spread the word that the allegations against Kavanaugh were a "hoax that was set up by the Democrats" at what he's called a risky time for men who can be falsely accused.

Accusations from several women remain under scrutiny, and House Democrats have pledged further investigation if they win the majority in November.

But clearly the pair do not speak for the 55% of women who told pollsters that they were opposed to Kavanaugh's confirmation, or the 52% who said they believed Dr. Ford's testimony.

Kavanaugh officially took the oath in a more hurried, private procedure Saturday, but the White House version late Monday was a chance for the Trump administration to perform the equivalent of a victory lap.
