You wouldn’t last two weeks without us, Donald Trump tells Saudi king

Saudi Arabia has increased crude production "significantly" to a near-record level amid intense pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump to reduce prices.

Trump's remarks followed a conversation between him and the Saudi monarch on Saturday. As crude oil prices reach a four-year high, Mr. Trump repeatedly has demanded OPEC and Saudi Arabia, the world's biggest oil exporter, push prices down.

A new report from Reuters says that Russian Federation and Saudi Arabia "struck a private deal" in September to increase production in order to suppress oil prices.

Trump criticized oil producers in his speech before the U.N. General Assembly last week.

The US military was stationed in Saudi Arabia from the first Gulf War against Iraq in 1990 to 2003, when then Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld announced pullout. Would you say they're rich?

Speaking at a campaign rally in Mississippi, Trump said: "I love the king, King Salman, but I said, 'King, we're protecting you".

Saudi Arabia has always been a major buyer of USA weaponry, spending billions of dollars on advanced systems, a point Trump was keen to make when Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman visited the White House in March. Trump told a campaign rally in the US state of MS on Tuesday night.

It remains to be seen if Trump can convince the Saudis to take a more aggressive line, although it should be noted that Saudi Arabia's decision to increase production by 300,000 bpd from August levels is not trivial.

Saudi Arabia welcomed Mr. Trump for his first overseas trip as president. The price per barrel was about $75 (€65) on Tuesday.

The presence of the United States military in Saudi Arabia, home to the two holiest sites in Islam - Mecca and Medina - was strongly objected to by most of the world's Muslim population, according to opinion polls published by Gallup in 2009.

Saudi Arabia's oil output has reached record highs - and the country could further boost production next month as U.S. sanctions on Iran edge closer. Not good. We want them to stop raising prices.

Trump has also pressed other USA allies, such as Japan, South Korea and Germany, to take more of the financial burden of their defence.
