107 civilians suffer rebels’ "poisonous gas" attack in Syria’s Aleppo

107 civilians suffer rebels’

This comes after government shelling killed nine people on Saturday in Syria's rebel-held Idlib, while state media said insurgent shells wounded dozens in Aleppo causing breathing problems.

Rebel commanders and opposition figures discredited the government reports, denying they threw gas into Aleppo and accusing Damascus of seeking to undermine an existing cease-fire and efforts to kickstart political talks.

Russian Defense Ministry spokesman's early statement today claimed that the chemical strike targeted the northwestern rural of Aleppo, with mortars being fired from Idlib de-escalation zone late Saturday.

The air raids were the first to hit the area since Moscow and rebel backer Ankara agreed to set up the demilitarized area around Idlib in September to prevent a massive regime attack to retake the area.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor said regime ally Russian Federation "likely" carried out the air strikes on a planned buffer zone around the opposition bastion of Idlib.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitor, said a total of 94 people were hospitalised after "the smell of chlorine" was reported in the city, but most were discharged.

Patients suffered difficulty breathing, eye inflammation, shivering and fainting, he said.

Aleppo has come under rebel attack in recent weeks, with missiles falling inside the city.

A joint report from the United Nations and worldwide chemical weapons inspectors last October determined the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad was responsible for the attack.

Both sides in the Syrian conflict have accused each other of carrying out chemical attacks, which are hard to corroborate in the absence of independent monitors.

Russian Federation warns of escalation in Crimea over martial law in Ukraine
Russia's ongoing militarization of Crimea, the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, poses further threats to Ukraine's independence. While other US officials took a strong stand behind Ukraine, President Donald Trump seemed more equivocal.

On Twitter he wrote that "the regime and its allies are using this as an excuse to launch a military operation in north Syria".

"Air strikes were carried out by Russian air force planes", Konashenkov said in comments reported by TASS state news agency.

The projectiles landed in the al-Khalidiya neighborhood, and wind caused gas to spread, Aleppo police chief Essam al-Shali told state TV.

Since early morning the Assad regime and Iranian-backed groups have been shelling and firing rockets towards Idlib's Jarjanaz and al-Tamanah towns and Hama's al-Lataminah and Kafr Zita districts.

A past UN-OPCW inquiry found the Syrian government used the nerve agent sarin in 2017 and also used chlorine several times.

Russian Federation accused Hayat Tahrir al-Sham militants of firing the chemicals at the town, at first claiming 12 were killed in the attack before lowering the death toll to zero.

In the neighboring Idlib region rebels are still in charge.

Assad's government has repeatedly denied using chemical weapons in the war.

In the past, rebels have accused the government of using chlorine gas to attack opposition-held areas.
