Bill Nelson campaign seeks to lift Florida recount deadlines

Prior to last week's elections, Broward County bought a new fleet of eight ballot-reading machines.

Leads by the Republican candidates in the races for a seat in the U.S. Senate and for the governor's office shrank as more ballots were tallied following last Tuesday's election.

Scott holds a narrow lead over Nelson.

Trump has not only tweeted - without any evidence - that many ballots in Florida are missing or forged, he has also called for the recount to stop and for Scott to be declared the victor.

A machine recount began over the weekend in the race between outgoing Republican Florida Governor Rick Scott and Democratic US Senator Bill Nelson, with another recount underway for the Florida gubernatorial race between Republican Ron DeSantis and Democrat Andrew Gillum.

But as they evolved, USA elections still kept more space for raw politics than has survived in many other modern democracies - including Canada - and that appears to be a big part of the problem we're seeing now.

Marc Elias, a campaign attorney for Nelson, contended there was no legal need for the existing deadlines since the Senate victor would not be sworn in until January.

Those were also a major sticking point in 2000 when then-Secretary of State Harris made a decision to halt the recount rather than extend the deadline.

After Tuter told all sides to meet to discuss a compromise, they agreed to add three deputies to the elections office in Broward. "We have to be careful about what we say".

Mr Trump, whose Mar-a-Lago resort is located in West Palm Beach, complained about the Florida races in an early morning post on Twitter. "He's thrown around words like voter fraud with no proof".

Presidents have historically sought to rise above partisan dramas surrounding election irregularities.

Studies have found no evidence of large-scale voter fraud in the United States, though through the nation's history courts have found evidence of policies meant to suppress voting by minorities.

Blackwell accused Democrats and their allies of fraud during an appearance on Fox News on November 9, three days after polls closed, but while votes were still being counted. Democrats have urged state officials to do whatever it takes to make sure every vote is counted.

Nelson has called on Scott to recuse himself from "any role" in Florida's recount process.

Scott then dropped his motion to quarantine voting machines within his purview, and was subsequently sued by a group of Florida voters and grassroots organizations, as they alleged that the governor abused his power to try to swing the outcome of his race for senator and the contest to replace Scott as governor.

Nordby also said Scott has little to do with the elections process, which is run by the state's 67 county supervisors, almost all of whom are elected.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which has said it will review allegations of criminal fraud, said it had no active investigations as of late Friday.

"The forces on the left, the Democrats and their allies, are trying to push this to what I call within the margin of litigation", Ken Blackwell, a former Republican Ohio secretary of state, said during an appearance on Fox News' Tucker Carlson Tonight.

It calls in to question Snipes' motivations, even though she has maintained she's unbiased, and her office is doing everything it can to comply with Florida voting laws.

Despite no final vote tally in the gubernatorial U.S. Senate and agriculture commissioner contests, some conservative pundits have accused their political opponents of fraud.

A spokeswoman for the Florida Democratic Party, Caroline Rowland, brushed off the issue, calling it a distraction by Republicans.

Scott now holds a lead of just 12,600 votes over Nelson ahead of Thursday's deadline for the machine recount to be completed.

The lawsuit noted that voters had no control over potential mail delays resulting from U.S. Postal Service delivery changes, or from an October bomb scare that evacuated a distribution center in a small and heavily minority community outside Miami.
