BREXIT: EU divorce deal in peril after two UK Cabinet ministers quit

BREXIT: EU divorce deal in peril after two UK Cabinet ministers quit

"We're in the Brexs*it", screamed The Sun newspaper.

The U.K. government, led by Prime Minister Theresa May, has been negotiating with the European Union for over a year.

A defiant May insisted Brexit meant making "the right choices, not the easy ones" and urged lawmakers to support the deal "in the national interest".

Northern Ireland minister Shailesh Vara was the first to resign over Mrs May's agreement on Thursday morning, saying, it "leaves the United Kingdom in a halfway house with no time limit on when we will finally be a sovereign nation".

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she was "very happy" that the European Union and Britain had reached a draft agreement but French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe warned the prospect of Britain crashing out without a deal was "still on the table".

They said British negotiators would get a frosty reception if they return looking for major amendments to the proposed deal, arguing several European Union national governments believe too much was given away to Britain already. So, a lot of people are saying it is a awful deal and all the people who wanted to remain within the European Union are saying "it is a worse deal than what we have at the moment". She now runs parliamentary business for the government.

"If she decides to go against all of that, then there will be consequences", DUP leader Arlene Foster said, though she refrained from explicitly opposing the deal.

The agreement sets out commitments over citizens' rights after Brexit, the proposed 21-month transition period, the £39bn "divorce bill" and, most controversially, the "backstop" to avoid a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

"When parliament rejects the prime minister's proposal, as surely it will, there will still be time for ministers to negotiate something better", Timothy wrote in the Daily Telegraph newspaper.

High-energy, and seen as one of the most effective members of cabinet in bringing forward new policies, Gove has become a surprise ally to May and so far backed her Brexit strategy.

Many Labour members were angered when a handful of MPs, including Hoey, Stringer and Frank Field - who has since left Labour - voted with the government on a series of amendments to the customs and trade bills which passed by only a handful of votes. This morning began with Vara submitting his resignation, followed by McVey.

Thre was a glimmer of hope for Mourinho's men when Romelu Lukaku was clipped by Ederson for a penalty, which Anthony Martial cooly slotted home.

But French prime minister Edouard Philippe warned that despite the draft, the prospect of Britain crashing out without a deal was "still on the table".

She acknowledged unhappiness among some with compromises made to secure a withdrawal deal but said it "delivers what people voted for and it is in the national interest" and vowed to "see this through".

The most immediate threat to May and her plan remains in her own Conservative party, where the foaming discontent quickly turned yesterday into open rebellion.

This outcome, the prime minister earlier insisted before MPs, respected the mandate set out by the United Kingdom referendum result.

Anti-Brexit demonstrators protest outside Parliament on Wednesday.

Big business in America tends to be, of course, on side of the European Union that eases their way into the Single Market.

Jacob Rees-Mogg, a leader of the party's pro-Brexit wing, threatened to trigger a leadership challenge.

Angry Brexit supporters and critics rallied outside May's office in Downing Street as she tried to get her disgruntled ministers to line up behind the deal.

With opposition among both remainers and Brexiteers, the math suggests otherwise.

Even if the deal passes with a narrow majority, the country will still be bitterly split between those who accept this muddling compromise, the little Englanders who demand a diamond-hard Brexit and the roughly 50 per cent of voters who wish this could all turn out to be a bad dream and Britain could just stay in the EU.

Appearing before the House of Commons earlier Wednesday, May confronted the anger of both those who want a cleaner break with Brussels and those who think Brexit is a disaster.
