Dire report says climate change will shrink U.S. economy

Sea levels are continuing to rise, and extreme events like heavy rain and floods continue to increase worldwide, which will "cascade across economic sectors", Easterling said, warning of "substantial net damage to the USA economy".

The report notes that the effects of climate change are already being felt in communities across the country, including more frequent and intense extreme weather and climate-related events.

While it said that numerous impacts of climate change - including more frequent and more powerful storms, droughts and flooding - are already underway, the projections of further damage could change if greenhouse gas emissions are sharply curbed: 'Future risks from climate change depend primarily on decisions made today, ' it said. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) criticized the "alarmism" of those who say climate change is a severe threat and said reasonable people can disagree on "how much and how rapidly". The report, prepared by more than 300 researchers in 13 US government departments and agencies, predicts that those events will become more common and more severe if steps aren't taken "to avoid substantial damages to the USA economy, environment, and human health and well-being over the coming decades".

In June 2017, Trump announced the USA was pulling out of the Paris Climate Accord, an worldwide agreement working towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It also suggested the world faces a risk of extreme drought, wildfires, floods and food shortages for hundreds of millions of people.

The Trump administration has rolled back several environmental regulations put in place during the Obama administration and has promoted the production of fossil fuels. "That means we have to focus on us", he said. "Warmer and drier conditions have contributed to an increase in large forest fires in the western United States and interior Alaska", according to the report. By the end of the century, the U.S. will be 1.6 to 6.6C hotter depending on how much greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere, the report warns.

Phil Mickelson beats Tiger Woods on 22nd hole in $9m showdown
It's always hard to tell in match play, but it looks like Woods would have been 3 under through 22 holes with six birdies. But since their heyday in the late 1990s and early 2000s, however, both Woods and Mickelson have been in steady decline.

The climate study, which assesses the impacts of global warming, was conducted in a nonpartisan fashion by 13 federal agencies and more than 300 leading climate scientists.

On Wednesday, Trump tweeted, "Whatever happened to Global Warming?" as some Americans faced the coldest Thanksgiving in over a century.

"Continuing to damage" means climate change already causing problems, present tense.

During a press conference Friday, officials behind the report repeatedly declined to answer questions about the timing of its release and why it contradicts public statements from Trump. Temperatures are still going up, and the odds of dangers such as wildfires in the West continue to increase. The first part, released a year ago, says the only convincing explanation for climate change is human activity.

But if the Trump White House thought releasing a major climate report in the midst of a hectic holiday weekend would bury its findings, headlines and news programs show that strategy appears to have failed.
