Dolce & Gabbana China blunder rages on

Dolce & Gabbana China blunder rages on

The spiraling backlash forced the Italian brand to abruptly cancel its Shanghai fashion show which was scheduled on November 21 after numerous celebrities, including Zhang Ziyi and Li Binging, reportedly withdrew from the event.

The controversy started when the Italian label posted a trio of videos on Instagram and Chinese social media platform Weibo titled "Eating With Chopsticks" (see below), which show a model attempting to eat Italian food with chopsticks.

A spokeswoman of retail giant Suning.com said they have removed all Dolce & Gabbana products after the incident.

The blunder was compounded when screenshots were circulated online of a private Instagram conversation, in which the brand's designer Stefano Gabbana makes a reference to "China Ignorant Dirty Smelling Mafia" and uses the smiling poo emoji to describe the country.

The brand crisis deepened when messages allegedly written by co-founder Stefano Gabbana, which included offensive comments about Chinese people, went viral.

D&G published three promotional clips Chinese internet users found racist to its social media accounts including China's Twitter-like service Weibo this week to help promote the Great Show, originally slated for Nov 21 in Shanghai.

Domenico Dolce and Steffano Gabbana appeared in a almost 1 ½ minute video posted on Weibo, a Chinese version of Twitter, saying they hope to be forgiven and will do their best to better understand and respect Chinese culture.

It sparked outrage online, with people dubbing the brand "racist" on social media.

On Friday, Dolce & Gabbana products were not available in China on major e-commerce sites Taobao and JD.com, as well as smaller platforms Kaola and Secoo.

This is not the first time Dolce & Gabbana have met trouble with the Chinese market.

In an initial statement, Dolce and Gabbana said their "dream was to bring to Shanghai a tribute event dedicated to China".

Chinese people are some of the biggest consumers of luxury goods, accounting for a third of spending on such items worldwide, according to The Guardian.

"Our families have always taught us to respect the various cultures in all the world", Dolce explained, "and this is why we want to ask for your forgiveness if we have made mistakes in interpreting yours".

"We will never forget this experience and it will certainly never happen again", Gabbana said.

Gabbana: We also want to apologize to all of the many Chinese people throughout the world.

Guests then began withdrawing their attendance from the show and online onlookers let it be known they were unpleased with Dolce & Gabbana for Stefano Gabbana's insensitive remarks. The South China Morning Post reports that retailers Xiaohongshu and Secco have also dropped D&G. Its ambassadors for the Asia Pacific region, singer Karry Wang and actress Dilraba Dilmurat, who is of Uigher ethnicity, ended their contracts with the company.
