Donald Trump: Reporters like CNN's Jim Acosta 'Bad for the Country'

President Donald Trump expressed uncertainty that the White House would prevail in the lawsuit initiated by CNN after reporter Jim Acosta was stripped of his hard pass, according to a Wednesday Daily Caller report.

In answer to a lawsuit filed by CNN after the White House revoked one of the network reporter's press passes, the White House on Wednesday asserted that it can decide which journalists are given passes and which one aren't. It says that pulling the pass was a violation of the First Amendment guarantee of a free press and that doing so is essentially a way for the president to pick and choose who may cover the White House and to punish journalists for publishing material critical of the president.

CNN has some 50 other employees who still have White House passes, the president's lawyers said. Trump frequently accuses CNN of disseminating "fake news" when he is angered by its reporting.

Both Acosta and CNN are plaintiffs in the lawsuit, which targets six defendants: Trump, Sanders, White House chief of staff John Kelly, deputy chief of staff William Shine, the Secret Service and its director along with the agent who took the banned journalist's credentials.

CNN has argued that Acosta's rights were violated when the administration moved quickly to revoke his credential, which allows him easy access to the White House grounds.

In a joint statement Wednesday, the news organizations said, "Reporters covering the White House must remain free to ask questions".

But Trump has made attacks on the press a core part of his political agenda, from when he campaigned on a promise to "open up our liberal laws" so he can sue media organizations, to his repeated labeling of the press as "the enemy of the people". "Rudeness really is a code word for 'I don't like you being an aggressive reporter"'.

Hollywood actors flee as wildfires raged on
At least nine people have died as a result of the fires as of Saturday, and more than 250,000 have been asked to evacuate. TMZ has also reported that Caitlyn Jenner's home in Malibu has already been completely destroyed by flames.

After the incident, Donald Trump later stated that journalists might be barred if they were not "respectful".

On Tuesday, the White House dismissed CNN's actions, saying the network was merely grandstanding.

"The President and White House possess the same broad discretion to regulate access to the White House for journalists (and other members of the public) that they possess to select which journalists receive interviews, or which journalists they acknowledge at press conferences", said the brief filed ahead of the 3:30 pm (2030 GMT) hearing in the case.

Acosta attempted to ask Trump another question before a female White House aide walked over to him. "If left unchallenged, the actions of the White House would create a risky chilling effect for any journalist who covers our elected officials".

The filing was the government's legal response to CNN and Jim Acosta's lawsuit over the recent suspension of Acosta's press pass.

"Jim Acosta is just somebody who gets up and grandstands, he doesn't even know what he's asking you half of the time".

How the due process rights guaranteed of pass applicants can mandate the President keep in place a reporter that the White House has deemed unwelcome remains to be seen and was not discussed in the pleadings.
