Driver was huffing before Wis. crash that killed 4

Police say the 21-year-old driver accused of striking and killing three Girl Scouts and a mother and injuring a fourth girl had been inhaling chemical vapors before the crash in northwestern Wisconsin.

Colten Treu, 21, who is also from Chippewa Falls, later surrendered to police, authorities said. He lives in Chippewa Falls.

Treu is being held in custody on suspicion of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle and was due to face court on Monday.

Police say a 21-year-old driver of a pick-up truck veered off the road and hit the troop.

Sgt. Daniel Sokup of the Lake Hallie Police Department told the Associated Press that the man will be charged with four counts of homicide through the negligent use of a vehicle.

The Girl Scouts were all wearing bright safety vests and were accompanied by several adults.

Treu sped off from the scene but later turned himself in to police.

Sokup said it was not immediately known if there were other factors that might have led the driver to leave the road.

Chippewa Falls school district officials said Treu had attended the same school district as the victims.

Troop 3055's regional council, the Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes, expressed its condolences on Facebook and said a vigil will be held on November 4 evening at the girls' school. "Girl Scouts everywhere stand with you during this hard time". "Truly, as a community, this affects everyone one of us".

"Chippewa Falls is a close knit community", said Superintendent, Heidi Eliopoulos.

Girl Scout troops are asking people to wear green on Monday to support Chippewa Falls Troop 3055.

The Lake Hallie Police Department extends it's deepest sympathies to the families involved.

One girl who survived the crash is in critical condition in hospital.
