Florida: Voting rights of more than 1 million felons restored

Florida voters on Tuesday approved a state constitutional amendment restoring voting rights to some 1.5 million people with felony convictions, ending a system that activists said disproportionately affected poor and black residents.

Desmond Meade, president of the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, led the initiative that landed Amendment 4 on the ballot.

Amendment 4 applies to felons who served their sentence, including parole and probation, but will not apply to those convicted of murder or sexual offenses.

Florida is one of four states that permanently strips felons of their voting rights. It also had key gubernatorial and Senate races this year.

On the line: Trump, Democrats battle in campaign's final day
The Democratic Party of Georgia confirmed that Small was a volunteer with them, but said she was not involved in any hacking. Democrats denied Kemp's claim and ripped the investigation as a "political stunt" from a "desperate" candidate.

According to the Sentencing Project's 2016 estimates, the measure will benefit almost 1.5 million people in Florida who have completed their felony sentences but can't vote. If another million people are added to the voter rolls, it could affect the balance of power in a state largely controlled by Republicans on the state level. According to Business Insider, almost one in four black Floridians are prohibited from voting due to a previous felony conviction.

Florida voters have regularly swung between supporting Republican and Democratic presidential candidates over the past few decades.
