Gillum Concedes Gov Race To DeSantis, Extending GOP's Grip Over Sunshine State

Republican Ron DeSantis will be the next governor of Florida after Democrat Andrew Gillum conceded the race late Tuesday night.

On issues like climate change, which is increasingly important in Florida, Mr. DeSantis has said he didn't want to be known as an "alarmist", while Mr. Gillum promised to be a governor who "believes in science".

The hotly contested race in Georgia, where Democrat Stacey Abrams was seeking to become the first black woman to be elected governor of a US state, remained too close to call early on Wednesday.

Florida's term-limited governor won a narrow victory for a U.S. Senate seat, flipping yet another seat to the GOP. The Tallahassee mayor won his primary on a progressive platform but has drifted toward the center in the runup to the general election, posing with establishment figures like Cory Booker (D-NJ) and former President Barack Obama.

Voters in Florida have a rare clear choice between a rock-solid conservative and a democratic socialist for governor.

His victory comes after a heated campaign to succeed Republican Gov. Rick Scott, who is term-limited. Hill, who owns a home in Florida and is registered to vote there, flew back to the state from California on October 21 in order to vote for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum in the 2018 midterm elections, as she revealed on social media.

The graphic showed Democrat Andrew Gillum defeating former GOP Rep. Ron DeSantis by 49.4 percent to 48.8 percent with 99 percent of the precincts reporting.

But the Democrats were trailing in redder areas of the state. We could not be more thankful for the support that was shown by each and every one of you.

Republicans controlled 33 governors' mansions and two-thirds of state legislative chambers going into Tuesday.

DeSantis, 40, was considered an underdog before Trump tweeted his support for DeSantis in December, a month before he got into the race. Trump traveled to each state in the closing days of the election cycle to energize Republicans at "Make America Great Again" rallies.

DeSantis ran a campaign marred by racism, which began with his praising the economy and saying Gillum would "monkey this up" if elected governor.

Despite all the hype surrounding Gillum, he failed to gain as many votes as his senatorial counterpart, incumbent Democrat Sen.

Joyner said he moved to Florida to vote in the race. Despite implications that DeSantis was racially insensitive - an idea he angrily disputed during a debate - he was able to win the state that Trump carried in 2016.
