North & South Korea demolish army outposts as ties warm up

The Centre for Strategic and International Strategic Studies (CSIS) report released on Monday argues that, despite talks between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, Pyongyang is reinforcing thirteen secret facilities that serve primarily to store nuclear weapons, reports Efe news.

The country's state media said on Monday the resumption of some small-scale military drills by South Korea and the United States violated a recent agreement aimed at lowering tensions on the Korean peninsula.

The existence of the bases - which presumably would have to be declared and then dismantled under the USA goal of North Korean "denuclearisation" - suggests that North Korea's previous efforts to dismantle known missile launch sites or nuclear facilities had little impact on its nuclear programme.

A USA think tank said on Monday it had identified at least 13 of an estimated 20 undeclared missile bases inside North Korea, underscoring the challenge for American negotiators hoping to persuade Pyongyang to give up its nuclear weapons and long-range missiles.

Analysts have long believed that North Korea had undeclared or hidden facilities in their missile programme, which has made issues related to verification and inspections a major part of working level talks between the USA and North Korea.

A month later, experts said North Korea had stopped dismantling a different rocket test site, also based on satellite photographs taken at the time and other sources.

He emphasized that it is necessary for South Korea go ahead with the joint work fast, saying that serious challenges could arise if it falls behind other foreign countries' advances in a field where technology standards are of great importance.

In July, The Washington Post said United States intelligence agencies have found that North Korea is building new missiles, based on satellite photographs taken at the time and other new evidence.

North Korea is accusing the US and South Korea of violating a treaty aimed at lowering conflict on the Korean peninsula.

"Our government will participate in the adoption of the resolution under the basic principle to make joint efforts with the worldwide community for the human rights of North Korean people to be addressed substantively as a universal value of mankind", Kim said at a press briefing.

Three types of missile bases were identified in the photos, including long-range facilities holding weapons which could potentially reach the US.

The imagery shows barely visible entrances to seven underground facilities at the Sakkanmol missile base - each protected from artillery fire and air strikes by 60-foot-high (18-meter) berms made from rock and dirt excavated from the site.

But North Korea has stepped up its demands for an easing of USA sanctions and the State Department, without offering a reason, said late Tuesday that Pompeo's meeting was off.

The activists said some 200 people have registered as members and they plan to expand it nationwide, according to Joongang Ilbo.

Medium-range missiles capable of striking Japan and all of South Korea reportedly are deployed in an operational belt 55 to 100 miles (90 to 150 kilometers) north of the demilitarized zone. The cancellation, which the USA ascribed to scheduling issues, followed threats from North Korean officials to resume nuclear and missile testing unless US sanctions are lifted.
