Tala Farea had been reported missing on August 24, according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, which noted that she may be with her sister, Rotana.

Rotana was enrolled at George Mason University, but left in the spring.

Tala and Rotana moved to the United States from Saudi Arabia with their mother in 2015, settling in Fairfax, a suburb of Washington DC, police said.

Rotana Farea has a previous address in Falls Church on record.

Tala Farea, 16, and Rotana Farea, 22, had been living in Fairfax, Virginia with their mother, but Rotana had moved to live in NY.

Problems arose for Rotana when she learned her whole family would have to return to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The sources say the mother told police that the sisters disappeared after the entire family, which also includes two brothers, was ordered back to Saudi Arabia.

Tala had briefly studied in 2017 at Fairfax High School, close to George Mason University.

Tala was last seen Aug, 24, according to a posting on the website of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. It was later discovered she was with her older sister in NY and the search called off.

Turkish prosecutors say Khashoggi was killed, dismembered in Saudi Istanbul consulate
A source close to the Saudi Royal Palace told CNN last week that the location of Khashoggi's body was not known to the Saudis. It suggested he had died in a " fist fight ". "He should not pave the way for a cover-up of my fiance's murder", she said.

The girls had recently applied for U.S. asylum, police said.

At least one police source speculated to the New York Daily News last week that the cause of death could be suicide.

Saudi Arabia's consulate-general in NY has appointed an attorney "to follow the case closely".

Investigators in NY are trying to figure out what happened to two sisters who were found floating near an embankment of the Hudson River last Wednesday.

New York City police sent a detective to Virginia to learn more about the sisters.

When the sisters were located, they asked the police for protection and were placed in a shelter, police told NYT.

Rotana and Tala were found fully clothed, wearing black jackets with fur trim and black leggings, when their bodies washed up near Riverside Park last week.

The pair did not sustain injuries commonly seen with people who have jumped. They say there were no obvious signs of trauma.

The police department released new passport-style photographs on Wednesday showing the two young women with headscarves over their hair. WTOP has been unable to reach family members regarding the sisters' deaths.
