Son of slain journalist Jamal Khashoggi expresses 'faith' in Saudi investigation

Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist critical of the Saudi government and its de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, disappeared at the consulate on October 2.

He argued that the order to kill the journalist "came from the highest levels of the Saudi government".

The so-called Universal Periodic Review - which all 193 United Nations countries must undergo approximately every four years - came as a Turkish official charged Monday that Saudi Arabia had sent experts to Turkey to cover up the journalist's murder before allowing Turkish police in to search the consulate.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has repeatedly demanded more information from Saudi Arabia, has also asked Saudi officials to say who in Riyadh sent a 15-strong team which is suspected of involvement in the killing.

Sabah identified the two men as Ahmed Abdulaziz al-Jonabi and Khaled Yahya al-Zahrani, saying they arrived in Turkey as part of an 11-person team sent to carry out the inspections with Turkish officials.

The tour came as Saudi Arabia faces growing worldwide outrage over Khashoggi's murder on October 2 in its consulate in Istanbul.

Bandar bin Mohammed Al-Aiban, the Saudi delegation chief and president of Saudia Arabia's Human Rights Commission, responded, "The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has already expressed its regret and pain for the death of Jamal Khashoggi".

Details of Khashoggi's gruesome murder at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, however, continue to be leaked.

In an interview with CNN last week, Khashoggi's sons, Salah and Abdullah, appealed for the return of their father's body to be buried in his birthplace in Medina, Saudi Arabia. The two men traveled to Turkey for the sole goal of covering up evidence of the killing before Turkish police were allowed to search the premises, the official said.

The official said Turkey believes that two members of the team "came to Turkey for the sole objective of covering up evidence" before Turkish police were allowed to search the Saudi Consulate, where Khashoggi was killed on October 2 after he entered to collect a document he needed to marry his Turkish fiancee.

The kingdom's public prosecutor Saud al-Mojeb was later forced to admit he was killed in a premeditated attack.

Diplomats urged Saudi Arabia Monday to take concrete steps to promote freedom of expression and protect human rights defenders and journalists.

"I really hope that whatever happened wasn't painful for him, or it was quick", he added.

But in fact, Salah Khashoggi said, the king had assured him that "everybody involved will be brought to justice" for the killing.

The Boycott Amazon and Souq.com online campaign was launched by Saudi social media users over what they see as the newspaper's biased coverage of the death of Khashoggi, who worked as a contributor for the Washington Post.
