Trump criticises Macron again over European defence remarks

World leaders attend a ceremony the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, France, as part of the commemorations marking the 100th anniversary of the 11 November 1918 armistice, ending World War I, Sunday, Nov. 11, 2018.

Her speech resonated with earlier in the day a statement by Emmanuel Macron, who warned about the dangers of nationalism and condemned the idea of "self-interest above all".

Over 1,500 U.S. soldiers who fought in World War I are buried at the hillside cemetery in Suresnes.

"We honor the American and French service members who shed their blood together in a terrible, disgusting war, but a war known as the Great War", Mr. Trump said in a speech at Suresnes American Cemetery, where more than 1,500 fallen American service members from World War I are buried. Around him, sorrow etched on their faces, former French soldiers stood rigidly to attention. National security experts have said Trump behaved like a "controlled spy".

Emmnuel Macron, to smoothen the worldwide communications in order to avoid war situations.

It was the first time the two leaders met since their summit in Helsinki in July, during which Trump claimed that he didn't "see any reason" why Russian Federation would have interfered in the 2016 U.S. elections.

"What's important is that he participated in the ceremony and at the dinner and at the lunch, and that he spoke to a great many heads of state and government", said Stoltenberg.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the leaders discussed a "variety of issues", including the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces treaty that Trump threatened to withdraw from, North Korea, and Syria. Other topics, in addition to the ones listed by the French, were trade, sanctions, Afghanistan and China, she said.

Speaking on Bloomberg Television Sunday, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg dismissed concerns over Trump's commitment to the Western alliance, despite his light footprint at the weekend's ceremonies.

Even though Germany was at the heart of provoking two world wars over the past century, the nation has become a beacon of European and global cooperation since.

"Patriotism is the exact opposite of nationalism: Nationalism is a betrayal of patriotism", he said, adding that, when nations put their interests first and decide "who cares about the others" they "erase the most precious thing a nation can have".

He also paid his respects to the thousands of American soldiers who died in WWI: "It is our duty to preserve the civilization they defended and secure the peace they so nobly gave their lives for one century ago".

"The old demons are rising again, ready to complete their task of chaos and of death", Macron said. "History sometimes threatens to repeat its tragic patterns, and undermine the legacy of peace we thought we had sealed with the blood of our ancestors".

On Sunday afternoon Mr Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel attended a peace conference - the Paris Peace Forum - with leaders including Mr Putin and Turkey's Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The inaugural edition of the Paris Peace Forum, organized in the framework of centenary commemorations of the end of the First World War, is bringing together the representatives of 84 countries and global organizations for three days in the French capital.

"Let us build our hopes rather than playing our fears against each other", he said.
