UNC reportedly hiring Mack Brown as next coach

UNC reportedly hiring Mack Brown as next coach

On Monday morning, Inside Carolina reported that multiple sources have confirmed Brown will be the next head coach of the North Carolina football team.

Texas football could be impacted any number of ways by some of the recent coaching news happening around the Power Five conferences. Brown was originally hired at UNC in 1988 and led the Tar Heels to three 10-win seasons and three bowl victories before being hired away by Texas in 1998.

Brown coached 1998 Heisman Trophy victor Ricky Williams as well as three Maxwell Award victor (Williams, Vince Young, Colt McCoy), a Butkus Award and Thorpe Award winners. Fedora did wear out his welcome in Chapel Hill, NC, hence the move to bring someone aboard like Brown.

On Tuesday, the UNC Board of Trustees met in closed session for less than 30 minutes before the announcement of Brown's hire was made.

Recruiting has also slid along with fan attendance at Kenan Stadium. UNC hadn't ranked worse than 32nd nationally or fifth in the ACC from 2013-18. North Carolina finished 10-2 and 11-1 in his final two seasons.

The senator's comment evoked the lynching of African Americans in a state whose past is rife with racial violence. If Republicans hold on the seat, their majority in the US Senate will be extended to 53-47.

But by that point, Brown was gone.

On Sunday, Tom Luginbill, an ESPN college football analyst, and Kirk Bohls, a longtime columnist at the Austin American-Statesman, each indicated that Brown could be the next man in line for the vacant head coaching job at North Carolina, where he was the head coach at for 10 seasons prior to being hired at Texas in December 1997.

Texas played for another championship in the 2009 season behind quarterback Colt McCoy, but lost to Alabama to finish 13-1.

While Brown would inherit a UNC program in desperate need of a turnaround, there is at least one bit of good news for him: the school has been finishing construction on a new indoor football practice facility with adjoining outdoor fields - a complex that was supposed to open this season but hit delays - as part of a $115 million athletics facility project.
