Politicians and leaders across the US mourned the death of former President George Herbert Walker Bush, late Friday night as the Bush family celebrated Bush senior's life.

"Through his essential authenticity, disarming wit, and unwavering commitment to faith, family, and country, President Bush inspired generations of his fellow Americans to public service", he added.

His son, George W Bush, issued a statement Friday following his father's death. They had been married for 73 years.

The Republican politician also served as a congressman, ambassador and director of Central Intelligence.
