Germany: Drugged driver forces car onto airport tarmac

Flights have been suspended at Hannover airport in central Germany after a man tried to drive onto the facility's apron. The vehicle was reportedly registered in Poland and police said no risky items were found inside it.

They later tweeted that the security areas have been cleared, and all flight operations have been suspended at the airport while the incident is being investigated.

Takeoffs and landings were halted while police experts examined the vehicle.

"Police checks of the vehicle have been completed, no unsafe objects were found. Hanover airport resumed operations at about 20:05 (1905 GMT)", Hanover police said. No one was hurt in the incident.

If Lampert does submit a bid - which will be made public - it would be decided by next Friday whether he is a qualified bidder. With Sears ( SHLDQ ) in bankruptcy, Friday is its last hopes of emerging and saving itself from liquidation.

Departures and landings of planes resumed shortly after 8:00pm (local time) after being halted for about four hours. Police officers were able to stop and detain the driver.

Hannover police said the driver tested positive for cocaine and amphetamines. According to Eurocontrol, the airport remains closed until 20:00 UTC'. Other tips involved possible extremists surveilling German airports.

Police sources said a terrorist motive could be "basically ruled out".
